Intel Core i7-4650U and Intel Celeron (Bay Trail) J1800

Post by kvaruni » Sun Mar 16, 2014 5:02 pm

My goal in the last few weeks was to build an entirely silent encode box, to lower the burden on my Macbook Air (the Core i7 machine). The requirements were that it could be used to rip Blu-Ray to an mkv and subtitle OCR (basically ruling out anything without Wintel), it had to be cheap, it had to be fast and it had to be fanless.

The build eventually turned into a J1800 motherboard from Gigabyte, which has an on-board J1800 bay trail processor with a TDP of only 10W. This new Atom architecture, the first to be out-of-order, is a beast and puts all old Atom models to shame. The reason to pick the J1800 though was that this is one of the few non-Core processors with support for Intel QuickSync. Combined with a small SSD, a little RAM and a mini-itx case all the goals were met.

But how does the J1800 perform? As it turns out, surprisingly well. To test the performance, I pitted the J1800 and the i7 i7-4650U against each other. the testbed consisted of Big Buck Bunny (1080p, 24fps) and Tears of Steel (1080p, 24fps, 4k master).

What we all want to know:
Big Buck Bunny (High Profile 1080p encode):
J1800, medium: 4.00 fps
J1800, QSV: 66.51 fps
i7-4650U, medium: 12.24 fps
i7-4650U, QSV: 107.50 fps

Tears of Steel (High Profile 1080p encode):
J1800, medium: 4.21 fps
J1800, QSV: 86.57 fps
i7-4650U, medium: 13.14 fps
i7-4650U, QSV: 126.35 fps

Overall, the J1800 is fast enough (and silent!) to let it sit and work if I want to obtain maximum quality. It keeps up pace with most Core2Duo models, yet at a far lower power consumption. At the same time, converting a Blu-Ray can be done at about 3x native speed using QSV, which is faster than I can rip them from the disc :). The i7 handily beats the J1800 both in software and QSV speed. Thank goodness, given that the i7-4650U processor alone costs about twice as much as the entire J1800 build! 8)

Quality-wise, QSV on J1800 is clearly the loser as it is based on the pre-Haswell models of QSV. QSV on the Intel Core i7 and the medium software encode are virtually indistinguishable from the source in visual quality, even after pixel peeping. All encodes are virtually indistinguishable when actively watching in my home setup. Screen grabs from all encodes can be found here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/eiklbgth2upgul6/TL3SH_memW

Finally, I also include the logs of all the Big Buck Bunny encodes. The logs for Tears of Steel use exactly the same settings.

log for Big Buck Bunny, J1800 software:
