With upcoming changes to data protection and privacy laws in Europe coming into effect soon, we thought this would be a good time to remind everyone that we do have a privacy policy.
This applies to all users and visitors world-wide.

We have made a few changes to the language to make it clearer in relation to this new regulation but fundamentally, the terms and your rights are unchanged.

Intel i5 660 @ 3.33 GHz Win7-32/Win8 64/Ubuntu 13.10/64

So before I take this war horse apart and give her a transplant, I figured I'd benchmark her.

Test file is the 1080p Surround sound Big Buck Bunny. The source file is 906,906 KB, and the transcoded file is 437,385 KB

I used the High Profile preset and no other changes.

Core temps were around 60 C.

What we all want to see: work: average encoding speed for job is 10.093314 fps

About 24 minutes for the encode.

Oddly enough Handbrake found frames to decomb and detelecine...

Re: Intel i5 660 @ 3.33 GHz Win7-32/Win8 64/Ubuntu 13.10/64

Here are the results from Win8 64bit Consumer Preview Build 8250.

Test file is the 1080p Surround sound Big Buck Bunny. The source file is 906,906 KB, and the transcoded file is 437,329 KB. Just a touch smaller.

I used the High Profile preset and no other changes.

Core temps were unknown as I don't have that version of the gadget or the supporting lib installed.

What we all want to see: work: average encoding speed for job is 11.390851 fps

I guess that's close to 10% faster. With a longer encode I'd see a better gain, but I'm underwhelmed with 1 fps more. Of course it'll be better with the i7.

About 22 minutes for the encode.

Handbrake still found frames to decomb and detelecine...

Re: Intel i5 660 @ 3.33 GHz Win7-32/Win8 64/Ubuntu 13.10/64

Post by Smithcraft » Mon Mar 10, 2014 4:51 am

Here are the results from Ubuntu 13.10 64bit.

Test file is the 1080p Surround sound Big Buck Bunny. The source file is 906,906 KB, and the transcoded file is 447,824 KB. Wow! 10 MB bigger than the other two files!
I used the High Profile preset and no other changes.

Core temps were unknown as I don't have anything that I knew of to check them. Just installing Ubuntu took two freaking days! And the dang CPU fan is running full speed all the freaking time!

What we all want to see: work: average encoding speed for job is 11.876075 fps

Which is still faster than Win8 64. With a longer encode I'd see a better gain, but I'm underwhelmed with 1 fps more. Of course it'll be better with the i7.

About 20 minutes for the encode.

Handbrake still found frames to decomb and detelecine...

File size mystery!

Ubuntu is showing a different filesize for both of the Windows based transcodes than Windows is!

Win7 - 447,881,277
Win8 - 447,824,885
U13.1 - 447,824,477

So both of the 64bit encodes are a bit smaller than the 32bit encode, but the Ubuntu is not 10M bigger!

When I restart this beasty, in Windows I'll check the filesizes again.

I had Ubuntu set up on a FAT32 partition, but it was a Wubi setup, so it might have been a different file system in the Ubuntu space.

Checking W7, the file sizes are:

As reported from the file manager (as reported by the Properties window)

Win7 32b - 437,385 (447,881,277) (10.093314 fps)
Win7 64b - 437,329 (447,824,885) (11.333697 fps +11.4%)
Win8 64b - 437,329 (447,824,885) (11.390851 fps +12.9%)
U13.1 64b - 437,329 (447,824,477) (11.876075 fps +17.7%)

Oh joy! I can painlessly install W7Pro 64bit over 32bit! Thanks for the ISOs Microsoft!

Here are the results from Windows 7 Pro 64bit.

Test file is the 1080p Surround sound Big Buck Bunny. The source file is 906,906 KB, and the transcoded file is 437,329 KB.

I used the High Profile preset and no other changes.

I didn't install the gadgets that I use in my W7Pro 32bit partition to monitor CPU utilization or temps, so I can't say about the temps

What we all want to see: work: average encoding speed for job is 11.333697 fps

Which is just a bit slower than Win8 64. And without having to deal with the Win 8 sillyness!

About 21 minutes for the encode.

Handbrake still found frames to decomb and detelecine...
