Re: Intel Celeron G1610 @ 2.60GHz, 2 Cores

Benchmark #02:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Methodology used:
In this benchmark I want to target a SSIM value of >0.9900 (some sources may look crap with that too, so it varies...). Using 2 pass encoding.

So I repeat the 1st pass till I get an average SSIM of ~0.9875 (depends a lot on source). It can take several trials till you get near to that, using fast 1st pass obviously.
After that, I have to run the second pass with slower settings and if I don't get the desired SSIM value I will have to repeat till it gets >0.990000 and <0.991000 and as close as possible to 0.990000 (if patience is available).

Q: Why do you set resolution to 768x432?
A: Because that's enough. Not to mention it makes encoding a lot faster.

Q: Why did you set threads to 2 while x264 uses 3 for dual core processor by default?
A: The less cores the less quality wasted, paranoid speaking. And my processor won't take any advantage of 3 threads if can only handle 2 at a time (not sure). :)

_____Frames to Encode: ALL
Quality / Bit Rate: 1050kbps (it took some time to discover it...:P)
1 or 2 Pass: 2
Min/Max or Average Frames Per Second (FPS): Average FPS (1st / 2nd pass) = 68,722130 / 10,264555 fps
Handbrake Version: 0.9.9 (2013051800)

1st pass results:
x264 [info]: SSIM Mean Y:0,9845017 (18,097db)
x264 [info]: kb/s:993,25

2nd pass results:
x264 [info]: SSIM Mean Y:0,9900964 (20,042db)
x264 [info]: kb/s:1048,81

It is really not so easy to get to the desired SSIM Y of >0.990000 and <0.991000 and as close as possible to 0.990000 (if patience and time is available). If you don't have patience don't even try it...:)

Anyway, I could save a lot of bits (depends on frame rate if compared to CRF method as CRF will deteriorate even more at higher frame rates thus lowering your final SSIM, unless you specify a qpmax=~21-22-it varies) and still keeping my paranoid goal. CRF encoding no more (if time is not an issue, of course)...

Benchmark #03:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As the method above (Benchmark #02) is not going to give decent quality for some types of source. Because the "qp" of some frames can achieve very high values (28 and above).
And this is valid for the method described in "Benchmark #01" as well.

Then I decided to use a different method for this "Benchmark #03":
1.I will use the same settings, but this time I will add "qpmax=21" to prevent excessive quality degradation.
__You can use whatever "qpmax" value your eyes are comfortable with (in my case 21)...

I am going to use a short "lossless" video as a source this time (yuppy!).

Now, let's go:

Source video: Sintel Trailer 720p. Your results are not going to be comparable if you used one of those files directly (mine is a "lossless" H.264 stream in avi)...

Machine Type: Intel Celeron G1610 | 4GB DDR3 @ 1333MHz | Xubuntu 13.10 64-bit
CPU Speed: 2600MHz
Number of CPUs: 1 (2 cores)
Rip Format: H.264
Container: MKV
Encoder: x264
Audio: Disabled
Video Size & Settings:
_____Preset Used: Custom
_____Auto Crop: Disabled
_____Size: 1280x720
_____Anamorphic: OFF
_____Filters: ALL OFF
_____Framerate: Same as source, 24fps, Constant Framerate
_____x264 Preset: Placebo
_____x264 Tune: SSIM
_____x264 Profile: AUTO
_____x264 Level: AUTO
_____Fast Decode: OFF
_____Turbo First Pass: ON
_____More Settings: threads=2:psnr=0:qpmax=21:keyint=240:min-keyint=24:deblock=0,0:bframes=8:ref=8:me=umh:subme=11:no-fast-pskip:merange=18:rc-lookahead=240:no-dct-decimate:no-scenecut
_____Frames to Encode: ALL
Quality / Bit Rate: 2480kbps
1 or 2 Pass: 2
Min/Max or Average Frames Per Second (FPS): Average FPS (1st / 2nd pass) = 21,725016 / 4,883131 fps
Handbrake Version: 0.9.9 (2013051800)

Done, now the video is not only much smaller than the source, it is also at decent or near decent quality... :)

Also, there is no advantage in using 2 pass with this method, you can use single pass CRF with a high value (e.g.: 35), it will be faster and will give you "saner" results...

Re: Intel Celeron G1610 @ 2.60GHz, 2 Cores

Post by X264 »

Benchmark #05:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Source video: 300 - Rise of an Empire Trailer

This video was re-encoded by handbrake already. And I will re-encode it again (more quality will be lost, sadly), but at a different resolution.

And as time is not a constraint for me anymore I can use really slow settings and disable multiple threaded encoding from now on. Prepare to wait... :)
And for it to take as much time as possible I will do 2-pass, with the same settings for both passes (a.k.a. --slowfirstpass). Prepare to wait... :)

Notes:
This is a single threaded benchmark... :)
Minimum recommended memory to run this benchmark is: 1512 MB available.

Settings:
Machine Type: Intel Celeron G1610 | 4GB DDR3 @ 1333MHz | Xubuntu 13.10 64-bit
CPU Speed: 2600MHz

Benchmark #06:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Source video: Gravity Trailer

And for those who do not want to wait hours to run a benchmark of a 2min. video, I'll use "lazy friendly" settings this time...

Notes:
This is a single threaded benchmark... This way we can compare real CPU performance. :)
Minimum recommended memory to run this benchmark is: 1024 MB available.
