Summary:

I was originally planning to purchase one of the recently announced Mac Mini's to take over the media library duties, but decided to run some benchmarks first. From my research, I believe the new Mini will have the same chips as the 15" Retina MacBook Pro. Given that, it was pretty simple to just benchmark my laptop and assume that my results would be more or less the same on the Mini.

The i7's hyperthreading appears to make a substantial difference, keeping the lower core frequency from being a major bottleneck vs the higher clock speeds of the i5 3570k. Given the results I saw, specifically in the AppleTV 3 preset (which is more or less where most of my encoding happens), it made no sense to shell out $799 on a system upgrade. I chose instead to upgrade the Hackintosh to a Core i7, specifically the 3770k. My cost was $269 at Microcenter, $100 more than the i5 3570k. In the AppleTV 3 preset, that yielded an almost 18% increase in the frame rates. Not great when you consider that the processor is 45% more expensive than the 3570k, but, what the hell, I was probably going to upgrade it anyway. For a system that encodes 4-5 hours a day, an 18% increase is still substantial, and worth it to me.
