bulldozer 8150 @ 4.2ghtz

Post by Pure_Phoenix »

8gb kingston hyperx ram, windows + pagefile on SSD, source on seagate barracuda 2tb 7200rpm SATAII. Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD7 Rev1, which is known to have lower HDD and memory transfer speeds than the ASUS Formula 4 and be a few fps slower, but considerably higher overall in gaming benchmarks.

Source; Evangelion Death & Rebirth movie, vanilla edition. Not directors cut or remastered.
Ripped via DVDDecryptor about a year ago, maybe more.
Output drive is same as source.
Settings used were Regular > High profile.

EDIT: WOOPS! Forgot to mention, OS Is WIndows Developer Preview, which supports SSE4.2 natively.

Whole DVD converted in around 6 minutes @ average 87 FPS

Log follows;

Using a year+ old release to benchmark new hardware :? try the nightly which has a much newer x264 build unless you're decode/filter constrained anyway.

Nightly builds are currently offline and the 0.9.6 release is imminent; you should be able to update in the next day or so.

That would be ownage if i could get 0.9.6 and it had a big performance update. I'm already coming close to matching the intel 990 benches if i'm not mistaken.

From the Guru3D reviews the 8150 and the i7 2600k are just about the same for their test file.

my last system was an e7300 C2D so i'm definately not fanboying here. I do think this CPU shows alot of promiser under W8 when it's full math features (SSE 4.2) are utilised.

EDIT Yeah at stock speeds they're about the same, after alot of research i found that 1. the bulldozer pulls far ahead of the intels when overclocked, even comparatively to OC'd intels. They just dn't see to be getting as much bang-for-buck when OC'd, where AMD chips have amost always been designed for it throughout history.
Also W8 supports the SSE4.2 so that's giving me possibly another 10% improvement, idk realistically i'll have to wait for a modern 990 bench on W8. Windows 7 doesn't support SSE4.2 which is why the benchmarks will improve greatly for the bulldoazers when they start using W8.

Both of those links have OC'ed CPUs and they are within 1 frame per second. Of course it's their test file which they don't share, and they only test one kind of file so it makes it harder to determine the speeds of other formats.

I'm not sure how new CPU features are implemented(automatically utilized by the CPU, or have to be implemented in the software), so I don't know how well SSE4.2 will really effect Handbrake.

It seems to be supported, as you can see by the logs. After viewing the links you gave earlier, i'm noticign that the 8150 is meant to beat the 2600k (BARELY beat) at both stock and OC'd speeds.
The only issue that could give intel an advantage on community opinion, is that they don't have to overclock as much to get the same performance.
This could also be seen as a negative however, since they CAN'T overclock as much. Opinions will always differ on this matter, but i see it as being a bonus to AMD. Being able to OC to 4.6-4.8 on air and beat intel in transcoding benchmarks is a big feat since intel reverse-licensed the AMD-64 architecture for their own chips - and thus have been beating AMD in transcoding ever since. Beating intel at AMD's weakest subject could very well mean gaming and 3d editting benches will be far, far higher than intel... i will just have to wait and see. Will anyone here mind if i put down benchmarks on current gaming software too?

Either way i planned to dual boot as soon as i got this system and got a 120gb ssd intead of a 90gb, specifically for that purpose. This week i'll be updating to W8 consumer preview x64 & installing W7 ultimate x64 so i can even add comparative benchmarks under different OS that are set up exactly the same way (being, stock). I think i'll use a large, high-res free media file from the vuze network to test - and link it via magnet and/or website URL so others can bench with the same file.

If I recall correctly, there is a thread in the Benchmarking section for test files.

I'm getting BBB now but the mp4 torrent only has 4 seeds =/ going to take abuot another 6 hours.

For now here's a bench after updating to the Windows 8 Consumer Preview with Handbrake 0.9.6!

Source; The_Codebreakers_part1.mpeg from Mininova.org, "Documentary GNU Linux The Codebreakers". I chose this because it has more than 4 seeds and it's 1.5gb, so i was expecting a higher resolution. It's available at http://www.mininova.org/tor/2679069 or use the magnet URL; magnet:?xt=urn:btih:YWU6EL5LSII2APQHBJHT5J2TO5VPDRGL&tr=http://tracker.mininova.org/announce
