Dual Intel Xeon X5690s (24 threads)

Had a little time on a new server we bought at work. Did an encode of PotC (BR of coarse) before I put VMWare ESXi 5.0 on it. Here is the log:

HandBrake has exited.
With my usual settings it took 3hrs 43min. Honestly I was expecting a little better, but I know some functions are limited as to how fast they can go.

I think you'll find that it's only using 8 of those cores.

The CPU jumped around a lot. I would say it ranged from 15-25%. The server also had 96GB of RAM but HB never took more than 1.5GB.

The amount of RAM is less important than frequency/access time. Anyway, the reason I've pushed this thread is that I've also tested Handbrake on a XEON system today and I was amazed that the 6 core (12HT) took slightly more time [~15%) than my X6 1090T System. Ok, the X5650 has less core frequency but I thought the number of threads would compensate or outperform it. Further while the X6 System encodes with a nearly 100% cpu utilization over time the X5650 system wobbles from 25 to 90% during the encoding. Same source, same settings but different OS (W764 vs. W2K8R2)

Whats the reason?

Same thing here.

I'm running dual 6 core 3.33Ghz Xeons and am slightly underwhelmed by the performance I'm getting. I mean, its good, just thought it would be better.

I've been running 2 copies of Handbrake to squeeze out some more performance, which has been working well.
