I have:
Processor: AMD 64 X2 3800+
Memory: 1 GB
Container: AVI
Video: x264 1000 kb/s
Audio: lame 128 kb/s
Encoding Framerate: 45-50 fps
That seems amazingly good compared to my 2 GHz macbook pro core duo. My desktop is about 10 fps faster. I wonder what the source of this gap is? The desktop is a 64-bit processor and they both aren't doing anything else. Maybe mac os x is just a much heavier operating system?

Just tried the SVN:
Machine Type: AMD X2 3600+ Brisbane | 64Bit Ubuntu 7.04 2x512MB
CPU Speed: 1.9Ghz
Number of CPUs: 2
Rip Format: mp4
Encoder: x264
Video Size & settings: 720x480 (no crop), deinterlace default setting
Quality / Bit Rate: Size 700MB (Calculated bitrate: 882 kbps)
1 or 2 Pass: 2
Min/Max or Average Frames Per Second (FPS): pass 1 70.11 fps | pass 2 42.43 fps [Global: 44.077]
approx 1:30 encoding time
HandBrake SVN 30.7.07
$ HandBrakeCLI -w 720 -l 480 -m -e x264 -S 700 -2 -d -a 1 -E faac -B 128 --arate 44.1 --mixdown stereo -T -i /dev/dvd -o /home/stmiller/inconvenienttruth.mp4
These AMDX2 chips do quite well with HandBrake. I think I paid $80 for this X2 3600 chip OEM from newegg.

I also have an AMD X2 3800+ with 2x1024MB, OS is gentoo linux (64bit) and actually I rip the Charmed DVDs from my girlfriend. I need about 16 hours per Season (xvid, 2-pass):
handbrake -t 1 -i /nfsamba/ro/NEUE\ DVD/1/ -o Charmed\ Episode\ 01.avi -w 720 -e xvid -b 900 -r 25 -2 -E ac3 -a 2
I get 45-50 fps in the first pass and 40-45 fps in the second pass - and the machine serves the filesystems and the X-server of 4 diskless-clients at the same time...

Not mobile drive
I finally got around to testing it again, I am using the svn for both mac and linux. The numbers for both have gone up but they are separated by the same percentage. I have tried the MacGUI and MacCLI, they are nearly identical; I also started ripping the DVD with MacTheRipper before compressing. Also, yes on the linux box it is a 64-bit OS, but I have no idea if handbrake is 64 or 32 bit, or even if it would matter? I now have PCLinuxOS installed on the same machine (for non-linux users there is no 64-bit version of this distro), so I will be testing to see if I see the same speed difference on a 32-bit linux OS.
