2011 MacBook Pro 2.3GHz

Post by Axman6 »

I ran some benchmarks overnight to see how this thing fares. I should note that I did have a Windows 7 VM running at the same time, but it was using minimal CPU, and I had plenty of RAM to spare. I can try running these again if you think this is a big issue. I was somewhat disappointed by these numbers, and by the CPU utilisation, which barely got over 600%. This is my first time benchmarking, so let me know if I've done anything obviously stupid :).

Machine Type: MacBook Pro Early 2011, 15", 8GB RAM, 750GB 5400rpm HDD
CPU Speed: 2.3GHz
Number of CPUs: 1 (4 cores, 8 threads)

No, these speeds seem correct for a 1080p source. It's faster than my iMac (Core i5-760, Quad 2.8 GHz, 4 threads). I get ~90 fps for Universal, ~35 fps for AppleTV 2, ~28 fps for Normal and ~14 fps for High Profile on that Frostwire BBB torrent.

600% CPU usage seems all right too (the detelecine filter, enabled in the High Profile preset - and more importantly, video decoding - aren't threaded; CPU usage may be a bit better with SD sources).

You're disappointed by 600% CPU utilization on a 4 core machine?

Those numbers seem reasonable to me on a laptop.

8 virtual cores once you factor in hyper-threading. Those numbers look VERY good for a Macbook Pro. I may post some numbers for my 2007 Macbook Pro (2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo) as a comparison.

The new Macbook Pro is very much on my to buy list, although I'm also looking for the next iMac refresh with Sandy Bridge.

EDIT: For comparison, here is the same source/presets as encoded by my 3.5 year old machine, using Handbrake svn3841.

Code: Select all

Normal: 8.591 fps
High Profile: 3.555 fps
Universal: 26.090 fps
Apple TV 2: 9.765 fps

A 3.4 GHz quad-core i7 would certainly be fast :-)

That's more or less the same as my 2,5 GHz Macbook Pro from early 2008. I'm doing an encode now of the blu-ray of I am Legend with a framerate of 4.0 at High profile. Wish I had the funds for one of the new ones. Looks like a great machine. Being a student though, I'll probably wait another 2 1/2 years before I get a replacement as that's when my education will be done. Unless my current one dies on me before then of course.
