What's your avg fps with Core i7?

Hi.

I'm trying to optimize - but need to understand my system.

I get avg 35-40 fps when encoding what is basically MPEG-2 SD (DVD) content to H.264 using high profile quality settings (in a MKV container).

I'm using X58 chipset (a quick Gigabyte board), Core i7 920 and ca read/write with avg of 100-120 mb/s to HD's (RAID 0)

But can it not go higher avg fps with Core i7?

Are the high profile settings only for HDV1 (720p) / HDV2 (1080i/p) content?

That sounds about right for high profile.

You might try appletv or universal if you want more speed. It's up to you to decide the quality you want / perceive.

I could try some else than high profile on dvd's - may be that profile is best for HD? But wish thinking I guess ... high profile is the best profile for std. results.

Anyway less than 1 hour is fair for encoding 2 hours of content to H.264.

Sorry to revisit this thread, but I'm curious (and I've looked through ALL the other messages here for an answer) -- if 35-40 fps is about right for this machine on the high profile encode, anyone have just a ballpark figure on what would be right using the standard settings?

I use the standard setting (although with quality bumped up to 22 CR) on all my BR encodes, and on my present core 2 box (2GB XP 32bit) I'm getting around 5-7fps. My new machine is a core i7 (with 12gb of RAM running Windows 7 64bit) but I won't have it for a few weeks and am dying to know just how much faster I can expect (so any speculation is okay with me, even if it's just in the general ballpark).

35 fps is too high for full HD encodes (with the High Profile preset, that is). But your new machine should be at least twice as fast as the one it's replacing…

I just started using handbrake, so I don't have anything to compare it to. But...I have a new dell with the i7 processor (quad core with turbo boost and hyperthreading) with 8gb of ddr3 ram. I turn on ALL the bells and whistles...why not with all this power, right? Well anyway...i'm sure I'm using options that are overkill and probably don't make a difference at some point. But I get an average of 17-20fps. It takes about 2 hours to do a high quality 2-pass (non turbo first pass) of a 45 minute show.

HandBrake is installed with all defaults, I simply choose MKV as the container.

I rip my DVDs to Harddrive using DVDFAB (to iso). I just got 144+fps ripping a 51minute episode. It took about 8 minutes.

Encoding: task 1 of 1, 100.00 % (138.81 fps, avg 144.34 fps, ETA 00h00m00s) (I was able to copy this from the dos window because this svn3036 build sometimes freezes, or sits at 100%)

I've got a Core i7 920 D0 clocked at 4GHz

Using these settings I get about 20fps for 4:3 content and 18.5fps for 16:9 content, from a PAL DVD source.

I am impressed with the second-gen i7 processor; it is faster than the AMD X6 1100 processor. A typical 2-hour movie will take 12 to 15 minutes to convert, a typical 44 minute TV show takes about 6 minutes to encode.
