[x265, 4K] Post your results here!

Post by XiQui »

I have found that x265 4K encoding is a very time consuming task (especially for low end CPUs).

I am more interested in encoding fps for the ultrafast, medium and veryslow x265 presets for 4K videos.

I will start by posting my configuration and results:

CPU: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU G1610 @ 2.60GHz
Memory: 8GB DDR3 @ 1333MHz

Encoder: x265 (10-bit)
Settings: CRF 18

Video info: 4096x1708, progressive, 24 fps, YUV 4:2:2 (10-bit)

Results (average fps):
--- ultrafast: 3.09 fps
--- medium: 0.72 fps
--- veryslow: 0.07 fps

Thank you!

Benchmarks are worthless without some common factors.

What video source? Encode speed is intimately tied to source complexity.

What encode settings? Presets can change from version to version.

OK, but I just want some results to compare encoding time (in fps), then anything else is not so relevant, I believe.

What I want here is to get some idea of 4K encoding time for different processors/systems for some specific x265 presets (ultrafast, medium and veryslow).

Thank you!

OK, I did not know about this. Presets are as defined in x265 2.9.

The same system now using a different (and more complex) source:

CPU: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU G1610 @ 2.60GHz
Memory: 8GB DDR3 @ 1333MHz

Encoder: x265 (10-bit)
Settings: CRF 18

Results (average fps):
--- ultrafast: 1.67 fps
--- medium: 0.423 fps
--- veryslow: 0.045 fps

Then start by providing a source that is accessible to anyone who would be participating in the process. A popular one is Big Buck Bunny, from what I've read.

Unfortunately, I cannot use a whole movie for testing because of time constraints (it would take days).

As I already said, I am interested in rough encoding times just to get an idea of how fast/slow 4K encoding is on a specific system.

The source used does not matter much, but if people use a challenging video for the encoder it would be better (detailed and/or high motion seem to be hardest).
