ATV 2.3.0 Sync Audio

Post by cvk_b »

I finally got around to testing this myself. (2.3.0). I ran HDMI audio straight to TV, turned up volume. Ran optical cable straight to amp. I played both simultaneously. }}}echo{{{ …optical late.
Someone should test v2.3.1 in a similar manner.

This may not be the fault of the AppleTV either... the TV and/or receiver could be introducing the delay due to additional processing done on the signal. I've seen this before with other devices.

Good point. Couldn't hurt to bug your stereo equip mfr, too.

Sorry to chip in here, I just wanted to point something out. I deal with this every day as a sound engineer.

When you pass audio through any digital device it will introduce up to 3ms in delay due to processing. The actual time always depend on the quality of the decoder etc. in the TV or ATV and the hi-fi amplifier.

Add on top of this a correctly set up DD home theatre system that adds delay correction to all channels to get the surround correct at a given distance, and you add more delay to the system. Even if you have the Center speaker set at 0ms or distance, the amplifier does calculations to correct all speakers delay with the distance you give the system on setup. So, the center may not be at true 0 distance or time.

Because every system adds different time etc. this is where you get the delay effect from the TV and Amplifier, even if you are feeding the same digital signal. As I said, all equipment is different, and will add different amounts of time etc. from factors like chip quality, gain stages, conversion software vs hardware etc.

Before digital, we used to be able to take a tape measure to work out distance and time with large sound systems. Now in the digital age, with digital sound consoles, amplifiers and even speakers, we now rely on computer systems like EAW Smaart etc to work out the time delays.

Hope this helps.

I too just found this problem to be so bad that I found this thread through google.

My AppleTV connection is via HDMI to the TV RGB, optical output audio to the amp.

My observations. That Dolby Output on or off does affect the syncing.
If I play with the settings on my amp I found that selecting Dolby DTS Surround 'enhanced' as opposed to 'normal' nearly cures the sync issue.
But in the example I'm watching - Mary Poppins, of all things, the sync is never exactly right. On another movie it's barely noticeable. both have been through handbrake 0.9.3 on AppleTV default.
After a few more minutes playing with the amp's remote I see that the Dolby DTS normal and enhanced modes have different delay settings. 5ms seems to be the default. 0-15 the limits.
However, I have now found the delay setting on the amp, which I can experiment with.
One thing I also think I'm seeing is that the sync drifts in and out. One minute it seems fine, the next it's off.

There's definitely something odd going on here.

I understand the argument regarding slight lag when running audio through an optical input vs HDMI, but wouldn't that affect all audio/video content played on the Apple TV? All surround-sound content I purchase through iTunes plays/syncs perfectly, so that can't be the issue. And BTW, my ATV is connect via HDMI only and I still get the sync issue with Handbrake encoded content.

I don't believe this is Handbrake anymore. I watched "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" in HD yesterday as a Rent from the iTune Store. I had the same synchonization problem. In addition to this there were glitches in the video.

I've spent some time trying to find a solution to this problem. Until yesterday I was using the latest SVN of Handbrake and I still had the AC3-out of sync problem.
Yesterday i downloaded Handbrake 0.92 (2008021900). I used the same DVD's as I've had out-of-sync problems with before, and to my surprise the problem was gone. I used the built in Apple TV-preset, I've tried using both AAC+AC3 and AC3 only with no problems at all.

It would be nice if someone with knowledge in this part of the code could look at the changes that could have affected audio synchronization since 0.9.2.

There have been a TON of changes that impact the sync code from .9.2 to .9.3 (and into SVN). That said, I've encoded over 1.5TB of movies/TV shows and do not see this sync problem on my AppleTV. The only time I did was my own fault -- the way I had things connected was introducing latency to the audio stream, by the time it reached the receiver it was noticeably behind the picture.

This thread is a mess, and I've been ignoring it since none of you can seem to settle on a consensus for when and where a problem occurs. One person says it depends on the audio wiring, the next claims that it also happens with iTunes content, another declares it's limited to a specific version of HandBrake....

There were countless changes to every aspect of audio encoding in HandBrake after 0.9.2 and unless you guys decide to do some actual research through revision testing to isolate more precisely than "sometime after 0.9.2" it's not really possible to comment.

jbrjake: Clearly there IS a problem, since so many people are experiencing sync issues. Maybe it's with Apple TVs firmware, maybe it's with iTunes, maybe it's with Handbrake, maybe it has to do with the phase of the moon - who knows. But I do know that there's no need to get so passive aggressive towards a group of people trying to problem solve - that is what these forums are for, are they not? Since you have a more in-depth knowledge of Handbrake's code, perhaps you could provide us with some insight into the type of "research" you require to investigate the problem, so we aren't chasing our tails trying to diagnose something we don't understand. We'll all be happier when we are able to spend time enjoying our content and not going back and forth on a board.

He is talking about basic troubleshooting. You don't need to know the code to understand that. try different hookups with your atv to determine if its the setup (both hdmi and optical) verify nothing has changed in your amp settings, try streaming and syncing, etc. etc.. Try different rips to make sure its not a source specific sync issue. beyond that, if the same source encoded with 0.9.2 and 0.9.3 results in one with a delay and one not, then one interested in troubleshooting would start regression testing which means going through svn revisions, compiling, encoding and testing until the revision that fixes it is isolated. Given the changesets between 0.9.2 and 0.9.3 a tedious and time consuming task to say the least. This is basic troubleshooting 101 and requires no knowledge of the source code. It requires an atv, HB and an organized testing plan to rule out variables.

I would do it gladly .... however, I have no sync issues using 0.9.3 and atv 2.3 or 2.3.1 and all I encode for is my atv. So I personally have no interest in looking into it as there is nothing to fix as far as I can see. As I said before, synced, tried with both hdmi and optical.

fwiw, most of our regular testers (nightstorm, cvk_b, refulgentis and others ) regularly encode for the atv as well, and I would be surprised if there is a problem with audio sync caused by hb that they or myself never noticed during development. Between public releases encoding is constantly being done with most revs, and the atv is one of the most used target playback devices among devs and testers. Not that its impossible there is some bug in hb, I just mean it would surprise me that it hadn't been noticed before.

The only time I've had audio sync issues with my AppleTV is when I was using the HDMI output to send audio and video to my TV, which then sent the audio to my receiver via an optical cable. In doing some research, this was a very common problem with Samsung DLPs (and my model in particular). Once I ran a seperate optical cable from the AppleTV to my receiver, all audio sync issues went away.

Wait a second, I'm supposed to actually watch the file once its done encoding? I've just been encoding the DVD and filing the movie away in my iTunes library, never to be viewed.

Here are my findings with my 2 AppleTV units:

AppleTV #1 (Living Room) - running 2.3.1 firmware
- Sony 1080p SXRD tv
- video connected via HDMI directly to tv (tv does not support audio stream by HDMI)
- audio connected via optical to Denon AVR-5800 receiver
- AppleTV set to output Dolby Digital
- AppleTV content set to stream via 802.11n with full signal strength

AppleTV #2 (Bed Room) - running 2.3.1 firmware
- Samsung 1080p LCD
- video connected via HDMI directly to tv
- audio connected via HDMI directly to tv
- AppleTV set to output Dolby Digital
- AppleTV content set to stream via 802.11n with full signal strength

EXAMPLE:
Not every single DVD encoded with HB exhibits the problem, but a number of them do. One specific audio sync problem-child has been "The Craft". I have tried encoding with both 0.9.2 and 0.9.3 (2008112300) using AppleTV preset.

FINDINGS:
- Viewing the movie on AppleTV #1 (Living Room) the audio is always out of sync to varying degrees.
- Viewing the movie on AppleTV #2 (Bedroom) the audio and video are ALWAYS properly in sync with all content encoded with HB and VirtualHub.

VARIABLES TESTED on APPLETV #1 (Living Room) which produced identical results to original trial:
- Turning OFF Dolby Digital output in AppleTV settings
- Syncing (copying) the movie directly to the AppleTV unit, rather than streaming it via 802.11n
- Explored optical timing with my receiver - it is set to none and exhibits no issues with other devices connected via HDMI (for video) and optical (for audio) with the same settings (DirecTV HD DVR, Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Denon universal DVD player)
- Tested content encoded using VirtualHub, which exhibited no signs of sync issues
- Tried ripping the DVD to hard drive before encoding with HB
- Resetting AppleTV to original firmware (1.0 for each) and then upgrading directly to 2.3.1

What other information can I provide to be helpful to this troubleshooting process?

How about some of you providing titles that you have problems with, include the information of how they were encoded etc, and your set up's. Then maybe others here will have those titles too, and we can try and confirm if we have the same problems. Why not also provide a time point to check, so at least we are all checking as close to the same thing as posable.

Okay, so here is the next question, you do not mention an AC3 DD 5.1 compatible sound system in your ATV#2 setup. If not, regardless what you have the sound pref set to on the atv, if the atv does *not* detect the correct sound system attached (as it presumably would in your ATV #1 setup with the Denon), it will use the aac dpl2 track.

What does that tell you? As well, since you are only seeing it on *some* of the HB 0.9.3 encodes, an activity log for an encode with these symptoms would almost be mandatory for proper troubleshooting.

Hint:

Also, you mention Streaming on both scenario's. Again to properly troubleshoot you would try syncing on both setups with the same problem source to see if the issue persists.

Dynaflash,

The tv (Samsung LN37A550) advertises that it can accept DD and output it to optical, so I was assuming that it was able to do the decode, but you may be correct that my ATV #2 may be reverting to the AAC track, which may make the fact that they sync correct on this unit a moot point, since it is not connected to a AC3 DD 5.1 receiver of any sort.

To your second point, I published this encode log from The Craft in an earlier post:

To your final question, I have tried both syncing and screaming with BOTH ATV units with this file. The file plays back on my Mac completely in sync, but I'm not sure if that is because the file is fine and it's an ATV problem, or if it's simply because it is using the AAC track on the computer.

Without mods its using the aac track on your computer.
I assume from your comments that the tv in your ATV #2 setup is attached to an AC3 DD 5.1 capable receiver ? Try going directly from optical on the atv to the receiver and see if that makes a diff.

Remember NightStorms findings going through hdmi to the tv and on from there ...

No, my ATV #2 is NOT connected to a 5.1 receiver - only an HDTV that accepts 5.1 signals and can then output them to a receiver if you choose. I am just using the built-in stereo speakers on the tv. So i have no other way of connecting that particular unit to test the AC3 track.

k. then atv #2 is playing the aac track, the atv has to sense an ac3 5.1 DD capable audio device somewhere in the chain, just cause your tv can pass it through, doesn't mean the atv will send the signal if the amp isn't hooked up.

Makes sense. So what other troubleshooting can I perform on my ATV#1 which is connected to the 5.1 receiver?

You could always check that your Channel Delay settings are correct. If this is not correct, it could give you the sense that the audio is not in sync.

As per my previous post, my Denon AVR-5800 receiver has no delay set to its optical timing and exhibits no issues with other my other devices (DirecTV HD DVR, Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Denon universal DVD player) all connected identically via HDMI (for video) directly to the tv and optical (for audio) connected to the receiver.

And none of my VisualHub encodes exhibit the sync issue with the AppleTV. I can see no possible way that my receiver is the cause of my woes.
