Apple TV AC3 Audio Out Of Sync

Post by JVHB »

I have recently had a problem regarding audio sync issues on the Apple TV (latest 2.3 Firmware, Latest HB 0.93). I have provided an activity report of the worst culprit. When using the AC3 soundtrack via the digital output the audio is out of sync with the video. However, switch to the AAC via HDMI and the audio is OK. Either this is the Apple TV causing the problem, or the syncing of the AC3 in the the encode. I have posted one Activity Report, however, I have noticed similar issues on other encodes. The common denominator between them all is the fact that they are all interlaced 4:3 ratio music videos.

Re: Apple TV AC3 Audio Out Of Sync

Post by JVHB »

I have been doing further tests with all my previous encodes and have found similar problems with them all. It appears that in all my encodes, the AAC track is better in sync with the video than the AC3 track. I must add that the difference between the two is very slight, to most people it is probably insignificant. I notice because I am very particular. Like i said above, I am unsure whether or not this caused by the Apple TV itself or the encode.

Thanks again

Tested most my encodes again, this time with VLC Player and I am happy to report that both AAC and AC3 are in sync with video. So why is the Apple TV causing such a varying lag when outputting Dolby Digital via the optical output? Maybe I need to buy a HDMI compatible amplifier and output everything via HDMI. All my encodes are synced to the ATV which rules out any streaming network issues. Please help, I don't want to go back to having to use an actual DVD Player.

Have you considered latency in your amplifier?

Thank you for your reply. I have taken that into consideration. However, I am not the only person who has reported the problem - see the following link [/url]http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jsp ... ID=8569710[/url]. I am going to test whether outputting video via component connections and see if it is the synchronization between HDMI and optical that is causing the problem. All that matters with regard to this thread is that there is nothing wrong with the way handbrake has encoded my movies. It just seems strange at times that the real problem causers are all my music video encodes ripped from various music DVDs i.e quite noticeably out of sync. All my movies are OK except for the very slightly out of synchronization caused by latency in the amplifier.

Just an update. I switched my apple tv to component video and I still have the same problem. I have never experienced any lip sync issues using this amplifier before, and I do not get any lip sync problems when playing DVDs via PS3 or XBOX 360. Its only the ATV giving me problems.

Hi,

I am having the exact same problem. First I thought that it was with one movie only, but slowly I figured out that all of them are now out of sync. It is very very slight, but the audio comes a few millisec before the picture and the movie looks like it had been badly synched. The next time I will try to see if this is only the AC3 trac or whether the AAC has the same issue.

JVHB, I cannot remember having seen this issue before, I have been using the AppleTV (take2) since the beginning, and I started to see this issue only a few weeks ago (I believe that it matches the 2.3 upgrade). Did you have v2.2 before and had this issue ? If not can you try to look at a movie that you watched on 2.2 or 2.1 before and see if you sse this issue.

Re: Apple TV AC3 Audio Out Of Sync

I have only noticed it recently due to some of my encodes (all music videos) being way out of sync on the AC3 and not on the AAC. My movies are all OK (the AAC is better in sync but its only very very slight). If it wasn't for the out of sync music video encodes I probably would have never scrutinized my previous movie encodes as much as I have done and as a result would have never noticed. I have reverted back back to 2.1 via a factory restore and I still have the same problem. I am considering taking the ATV and exchanging for a new one just to rule it out of the equation. Do you connect via the optical output for sound and via HDMI for video? The problem I experience is that the sound is ahead of the video.

Ok, so I have exchanged my ATV for a new one, and the audio is still ahead of the video (ruling out latency in the audio system) when outputting audio (Dolby Digital and AAC) via the optical output. The level of synchronicity varies from file to file i.e. music videos are by far the worst. I Give up.

I'm having the same problem. I'm posting my log hoping that someone can see whether or not its the fault of my Apple TV or if there's a problem with my settings:

Updated your built-in presets ? You can't copy your old presets over to 093 and expect them to work. 64% ?. Constant fps instead of 'same as source' ? Deprecated x264 options...

Re: Apple TV AC3 Audio Out Of Sync

Post by malamin »

Well, I encoded the disk with the default preset. The picture was noticably softer and had less contrast than the my previous encode where I modified the settings. And the AC3 track is still out of sync. I admit that I'm a newbie and I've been combing these forums for the best settings for the best results. I'm running Handbrake on a Vista machine.

Here's my code:

Find a player for your computer that allows you to listen/select the AC3 track [ vlc/perian ]. Is there still a problem? Can you confirm the problem is the file and not the AppleTV/Hardware setup? That's such a popular disc… I'm sure plenty of users (I know I have) successfully encoded it. Pre-Rip it again, too, with MactheRipper, or similar software.

It's not Handbrake.

I'm also having audio sync issues when watching movies on Apple TV with AC3, ever so slight, but i'm also fussy.

When I open the files with Quicktime on my mac there is no sync issue.

So it's either AppleTv or my Amp.

I agree, I do not think it is handbrake that causes this problem. Just to clarify, is everybody who has noticed this problem connecting via the optical digital output, and that the sound is ahead of the video?

Yes, I am connected with the optical digital output.

I would just like to add that I am having the identical problem. Which I, unfortunately discovered after ripping nearly 200 DVDs from my collection. The playback on my computer is perfectly in sync, but AppleTV playback of that same file has audio that is slightly ahead of the video.

I am also still experiencing this problem. Has anyone purchased a HD movie from the itunes store and tested to see whether or not Apple's AC3 DD is perfectly in sync?

I think I'm seeing this too. It's not too noticeable, but it's enough to make me think "is this out of sync?" which brings me out of the film. Has anyone tested AC3 via the HDMI rather than the optical lead?

I have encoded other files using VisualHub and they appear in proper sync. Only those produced by Handbrake exhibit the sync issue. Both of my AppleTVs are running 2.3.1 firmware - is that the case with you others? Does this happen with 2.3 or earlier?

It appears that if the audio is carried through the HDMI interface the sync is fine (regardless of stereo or AC3 track). If the audio travels through the optical connector (regardless of stereo or AC3 track), the audio falls out of sync. Clearly there is a timing issue here - is that something that can be adjusted within Handbrake?

It is possible for their to be a slight delay in audio, depending on how your TV (or receiver) is processing the audio as it comes in. This was a big problem with some of the DLP TVs a few years ago... certain modes disabled processing that sometimes led to audio sync issues.

Is there something inherently different in how VisualHub processes audio, since those encodes are synced correctly?

I feel like there is some problem with the files HandBrake is generating. As a test, I thought I would try to see if VisualHub might be able to fix the file and resync the audio in a way that works on my system. Since it's already in an .m4v container, I figured the encode shouldn't take long at all. Wrong. Using a quad-core Xeon MacPro it's estimating the time to re-encode at more than 5 hours. Something is screwy about these files...
