Need Help Encoding for WD TV HD

Post by ataylor2009 »

My apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, but several search attempts failed to yield any relevant results.

I received a Western Digital TV HD Player for Christmas, which, so far, seems like a really cool addition to my home theater setup. I plan to use it mainly as an easier way to view the 400+ DVDs I've collected over the years. Currently, I have NO HD content - no Blu-Ray, no HD-DVD, no HD TiVo recordings, no HD camcorder. All I want is a convenient way to watch the movies I've bought over the past 10 or 12 years.

The WD box will be connected to an Onkyo receiver via HDMI and Toslink. Since I have and plan to keep all of the original physical discs, I have no need to make exact duplicates including the menus, extra features, etc. What I would like to end up with is the main feature with video performance acceptable for watching on a 60" HDTV and listening via 5.1 surround (DD or DTS). A subtitle set would be nice, although I think this is going to involve a separate file, based on what I've read over at the AVS forum regarding the WD device. An absolute imperative is the ability to embed cover artwork within the file (I guess via iTunes?). My wife will NOT be happy about having to scroll through a list of 400 movies; she wants cover art.

I don't know enough about all of this encoding stuff to know whether I need *.mp4, *.m4v, *.mkv or something else. Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

If you still have the bill for it exchange it for an Apple TV. As for ripping with menus and all that other DVD flotsam you'll need a player that supports playing VOB files (like your DVD player) or since you like menus and commercials (I personally just want the movie which is what handbrake does) why not just buy a 400 disk Sony carousel. Plunk all your DVDs in it and you're done.

PS the Apple TV is very wife friendly, you'll need between 2Gig and 3Gig per H.264 encoded movie, a DVD will require between 4Gig to 9Gig of HD space.

I own a WD TV HD and I can say that if you need chapter support you need to encode to a MKV container. Embeded srt subtitles in MKV are supported as of the latest Western Digital firmware update.
My workflow starts with ripping the main dvd title complete with english subtitles to the hard drive, so I can rip the subs to vobsub and convert to srt.
I use HandBrake on the ripped VIDEO_TS folder and I usually use the new Apple TV preset and change the container from M4V to MKV. Retainng AC3 audio along with AAC.
For the subs I use Avidemux.
I then mux the srt subtitle into the MKV file with MkvmergeGUI.
This results in a good quality file with the original audio quality (AC3), soft subtitles and chapter selection that works.

I can also say that FF RWD doesn't work with M4V files yet it is fine with MP4, MKV and AVI. So if you have any M4V files rename the extension to MP4 to enable fast forward on the WD TV HD

Thanks Bling2Ming - that's exactly what I was looking for. I'm trying to get RID of a 200-disc carousel; I don't want to add another.

I gotta say, though - somebody smarter than me needs to come up with a 1-click solution for this. You're talking about a bunch of steps:

Rip to HDD
Re-encode to MKV
Rip subtitles
Mux the subs into the MKV

Any of which have a zillion options. Anyhow, thanks for your help!

I could use some help as well. I have the same goal as the original poster - converting a couple of hundred DVDs to load up on a 1TB USB disk connected to the WD HD TV.

I started using the PS3 preset, using mp4 format. The video looks great, but I am having problems with the audio. If I leave the defaults alone and use the AAC encoding (Dolby Surround), I am only getting stereo output. If I change it to use AC3, I get NO audio, and a message that says "audio channel 1 (unsupported)" This is connected to an Onkyo receiver via an HDMI connection, if it matters.

Any one else seen this? If anyone has a foolproof set of configurations to get a good picture AND the dolby digital audio intact, I'd appreciate seeing them.

Sorry if this has been covered already, the dang thing is called WD HD TV, and the search function for this forum does not allow searching on 2 letter words...

I have tried repeatedly but gotten no help re: handbrake. Solution is to rip to *.ISO files. Audio works, video works, menus will be intct when WD decides to support them. Also it's MUCH quicker than encoding.

Here's what I have learned over the last month.

Western Digital TV-HD Video Capabilities.

Part 1. Learned from the Web.

1. mpeg-2 MP@HL up to 1920x1080p24, 1920x1080i30 or 1280x720p60 resolution.
2. mpeg4.2 asp@HL. Rectangular shape video decoding up to 1280x720p30 resolution, support for B Pictures, data partitioning and error
resiliency. No support for global motion compensation (GMC).
3. WMV9(wmv3) up to 1280x720p60) (<90% of the P-picture macroblocks have 4 motion vectors) or 1920X1080p24 resolution. Up to
1280x720p30 or 1920x1080p24 resoltuion if unconstrained 4 MV bitstream.
4. mpeg-4.10 (H.264) (AVC) BP@L3 up to 720x480p30 or 720x576p25 resolution, include FMO and ASO.
5. mpeg-4.10 (H.264) (AVC) MP@L4.1 and HP@L4.1 up to 1920x1080p24, 1920x1080i30 or 1280x720p60 resolution.

Compatible format specifications for Firmware >= 1.01.01

MKV file-
Using x264 codec, there is a reference frame limitation based on the resolution used. This limit has been lifted higher being more lenient than the original firmware but limitations still exist.

HD capability-
x-1920:Y-800-832@8rf\848-928@7rf\944-1024@6rf\1040-1080@5rf
x-1440:Y-800-832@11rf\848-896@10rf\912-960@9rf\976-1056@8rf\1072-1080@7rf

ALL 720p and SD videos are fully compatible.

MKV with DTS must be remuxed over to M2TS with TSMuxer or audio issues WILL arise (you could alternatively demux the DTS stream with Mkvextract convert it to AC3 via libdca and aften then remux with Mkvmerge).

Part 2. Learned by myself via trial and error.

Thumbnail support only with MP4 files. I tag with AtomicParsley or MetaX depending on the OS I am using at the time.

With MP4/M4V the device only supports aac audio no ac3. However with with MKV the device supports both aac and ac3 pass through, but not vorbis. (The lack of vorbis support in mkv is weird as it will play an audio ogg file fine).

Subtitle support is either SRT within MKV or standalone SRT file with same prefix as the MP4. Vobsub within MKV not supported and I have not tried standalone vobsub with same filename prefix so can't comment.

Chapters work in MKV but not in MP4.

The most annoying bug for me is in anamorphic MKV playback where when changing the audio track the device forgets the video is anamorphic and plays back with the wrong aspect until I stop and restart the video from the beginning. This has led to me removing all but the AC3 track with Mkvmerge on all my dual audio anamorphic MKVs. This bug also bites when resuming an anamorphic MKV video you were watching earlier (anamorphic MP4 works fine).

Allow me to add a few things for the benefit of the WDTV owners here:

1) Thumbnails WILL NOT work at the moment unless they are embedded in the metadata of an MP4 file or a WMV file (needless to say, thumbnails were so important to me that I ended up re-ripping my ENTIRE DVD collection to MP4, as they were AVI before). In order to embed the thumbnail, the easiest method is probably going to be AtomicParsley (it's available for Windows, Linux and Mac). However, you'll have to go find the image yourself (maybe a nice DVD cover or movie poster from IMDB?) and crop it to your liking in order to embed it. I've found that 400x315 (or as close to that as possible) works perfectly.

If you go to my review of the WDTV (http://www.learnaboutlinux.net/blog/37- ... dia-player), you can read more information about this and more importantly, near the bottom of the review, I included a program that I wrote in Python/GTK that will automatically scan a directory for MP4 files, show you cover matches from the Internet, crop a cover, and embed it into the file, all in one program. I use this for all of my videos before I put them onto the hard drive that is connected to the WDTV.

2) The WDTV doesn't support DTS downmixing. So if you want 5.1-channel sound, you're going to have to use an optical TOSlink cable and connect it to a device that supports DTS decoding (such as a receiver or surround sound system). Otherwise, the WDTV will decode AAC in stereo, regardless of how the audio track is encoded, and it will give you "audio channel 1 (unsupported)", as someone mentioned earlier. If your surround sound system supports digital audio decoding, you can grab a TOSlink cable for a few bucks, it's worth it.

3) I have a 65" HDTV, so when I rip my DVDs I'm a total anal-retentive freak when it comes to quality (I've been known to re-rip the same DVD over 10 times until I get the quality I want). My suggestion is to rip a single chapter (preferably a chapter that has plenty of movement and color changes in order to ensure the best quality overall) using one of HandBrake's presets, and then just tweak it as you see fit. H.264 is obviously the best codec to go with, but it will take much longer to rip a DVD this way (still worth it). If you're on Linux (because I couldn't find the same thing with the Windows and Mac versions), PM me and I can shoot you my "presets" file. I spent countless hours tweaking these presets to my liking, and you can simply replace my file over your own presets file (typically located in "/home/<you>/.config/ghb/presets") and immediately get all of my presets instead of the default ones (I categorized them according to the type and length of the film).

4) I've also started a group for WDTV owners, so we can have a collective voice to WD, and be able to submit feature requests (as we have already done several times) and bugs and other issues. One of the requests I've recently submitted is networking (using the second USB port for the ability to connect a USB wireless device... all they would need is to embed a device driver into the firmware). I would like to echo requests like these with a larger influence (namely, more consumers). Visit the site I linked above in order to join the mailing list (you won't get spammed... promise!).

I purchased a WD TV about a week ago and already I'm pretty bummed. The Media Converter software included doesn't work with .VOB files. Also, does anyone know how to put a cover art on .VOB files? I'm using DVD Shrink to encode my DVDs into one single large .VOB file with some compression to save space. What I want mainly is to get my kids' DVDs on HDD because they don't last a week with all the scratching; (kids...). It sucks because I don't have chapter support but at least I can see the movies. I thought that by now there would be a Handbrake "recipe" for encoding my DVDs for the WD TV but I can tell from this thread there isn't one straightforward way to get my DVD collection on the WD TV. I actually bought a couple of months ago for $60 a Philips DVD player that has a USB port on it where I connect an external HDD and I can play .VOBs with no problem but the interface just displays the file structure I have on the drive. I bought the WD TV thinking it would do the same but with a nicer, more user-friendly interface that my wife and kids could use.

Any suggestions before I return it to Newegg??

Well, like I said earlier, the WDTV doesn't currently support thumbnails on anything other than MP4 or WMV files. Unfortunately, the thumbnail support isn't fantastic.

You're not the only one to complain about the thumbnail issue (that's the biggest complaint so far), but if you want (since you're an owner of a WDTV) you can join my mailing list, and I'll send the group's concerns over to WD support (including the thumbnail issue). Just look at my previous post.

What I do is take a DVD and encode it to MP4 format, I actually made a set of presets for HB just for this purpose... but then you don't get the DVD menus like you can with VOB files. Chapter support also isn't supported with MP4s.

But then again, all these issues are things that can be fixed in the firmware of the device. If WD will improve the firmware, then in turn the device's features will be improved without having to go out and buy a new device. Remember, this thing is $99, so you're still getting a great value.

The WD TV supports Matroska, does it not? That's the container I'd be using if I wanted chapter support.

Yes, the WDTV supports Matroska/MKV and recognizes its chapters.

I bought this and to be honest am very disappointed that it doesn't support a m4v file using fast forwarding, or chapters. Not to mention no thumbnails. Does anyone know any other setting that handbrake does that looks as good as the apple tv presets? and supports fast forwarding and/or chapters and/or thumbnails.

I did change a file from m4v into a mp4 file and WD TV does support fast forwarding. If anyone knows how to add thumbnails that would solve my problem. I tried atomic parsley but I may have done it wrong because it didn't work. I may have even downloaded the wrong version. If anyone knows where to find the right version (i'm using a mac) and step by step on how to make the thumbnails to work. If I can get that woking on a mp4 then I won't get a apple tv.

I know it sounds silly but I really want the thumbnails and fast forwarding at the least.

PS does anyone know if apple tv supports m4v files with thumbnails?

Thanks

I use Metax http://www.kerstetter.net/page53/page54/page54.html or AtomicParsley.

Metax is a lot easier.

Also if you upgrade your WD TV firmware to the latest version thumbnails are supported by placing a jpeg file with the same filename as your mkv, mp4 or avi into the same folder.

Also make sure library mode is turned on in the WD TV Settings.

I've been encoding to MKV with bad, bad results. Starting with the Animation or TV presets (for a show like The Simpsons, or Monty Python's Flying Circus), I set anamorphic to loose, switch on detelecine and decomb, set CQ at 62%, audio to AC3, and off I go. Resulting files look good, sound great, but are many seconds out of sync. No good at all. Same issues with detelecine switched off. For those transcoding successfully to MKV, could you share your settings? One failed attempt below.

Try re-ripping the DVD with Ripit 1.2.11, or with a better ripper.

That rip was done with RipIt, actually. I did several discs with it, several with MTR and got the same results throughout.

Either way, the version of Ripit you used is buggy, and the rip may suffer from "visual artifacts" at some points in the movie.

Regarding the (AC3) audio out of sync issue, what are you using to play the files?

I'm using the WD TV HD for playback (I'm on-topic, honest). I haven't noticed any visual artifacts, but the audio gets out of sync by 5, 10, 15 seconds. Rewinding for a moment can usually resync the audio, but it only stays in sync for a moment.

What happens if you play the file locally (on your computer), in VLC for example? Does the audio also get out-of-sync?

Plays fine in VLC, no sync issues across multiple chapters.

@fishpatrol

You can update your WD TV firmware to the latest beta it is supposed to address mkv sync issues.

See here. http://www.wdtvc.com/2009/05/19/wd-rele ... are-10208/

It's got to be worth a try.

I'm actually running the 1.02.08 firmware, sorry, should have mentioned that earlier. From what I've read, the sync issues most people have reported with MKV files are with 720p/1080p files and the audio lags by half a second or so. I'm outputting 700x480 and my audio is way off, so although they could be suffering from the same issue, I'm not sure. Before this I was using the 1.02.03 firmware, which some users report working fine with MKVs that now have sync issues under 1.02.08.

I know the WD has restrictions on ref-frames at high resolutions, but those restrictions are relaxed as your res gets lower. I'm not an advanced enough user to tweak settings myself, which is why I stuck essentially with the presets. Wanting to use the Matroska container and use CQ drove my other settings.

I also tried to transcode some 1080i OTA-capped material (EyeTV, edited with MPEG Streamclip) to 720p with settings that were otherwise similar (ref frames=3). Sync was again off--I think the video was actually faster than the audio during playback. Apologies, I don't find a log file for that encode. The original MPEG2 file plays happily on the WD, but no luck with the MKV. This to say, I'm also having issues with non-DVD-sourced MKVs

I have not seen any significant audio sync issues with mkv on the WD TV with V1.02.08, but I am in the UK and deal with primarily PAL sources. Which means that even when selecting a same as source frame rate I usually end up with a constant 25fps or thereabouts.
If you select a specific 23.976 frame rate does the sync issue on the WD TV go away? You could do a short test encode of 2 to 3 chapters.

I wonder if the V1.02.08 firmware has trouble with variable frame rate mkv files.

A test file played in-sync when the framerate was set to 23.97. Off to check my version of RipIt and see if I can run a couple encodes that don't throw file errors.

How might Handbrake create a variable framerate file if detelecine is off and the framerate is set to "same as source"? Can DVD video have a variable framerate?
