MediaFork Ripping speed
Good day,
I got my AppleTV yesterday. It exceeded my expectations. Mainly, we sometimes forget that good, great technology done properly can be almost underwhelming. Why? Because it's setup was completely uneventful, navigation makes total sense and it works great. It simply works exactly like it's supposed to.
So... now it's time to start ripping my large DVD collection. I have ripped two movies so far. The Abyss Special Edition and The Break Up. I have a quad 3.0 ghz MacPro, 4gb of RAM, 2 250gb in a raid and one 750gb drive that will become the library for iTunes. Each DVD has taken almost 8 hours each to rip. Am I doing something wrong of is this simply how long it takes?
Thanks, Steve

Steve,
I'm dealing with the same issue. I'm averaging about 6 - 8 hours per rip using a single processor imac 2ghz.
Currently I'm using the H.264 codec with frame size of 640 x 336. My other settings are:
Average Bitrate of 1000
Audio at 192
2-pass encoding is 'on'.
I'm averaging 12.22 fps, seems silly slow. I'm curious what your settings and results are with your quad 3.0 to see how advantageous that machine is over what I'm using for this project?
Thanks,
Corey

Try this H.264/48K/192/1300Kps
It should rip at least 30-40 fps OR faster on a MacPro.
My friends Core 2 Duo (on XP) rips at 70-80fps its over clocked to 3.5 Ghz

Here are the settings I am using... I don't really know what I should be using so I'm just going with the general defaults plus changing these two settings.
Codec to H.264
Audio sample rate to 48khz
Since I reported the issue the last three DVD's have ripped in a couple hours a piece. I wasn't staying by the computer so I can't exactly tell. I'll take some times and post tomorrow for anyone who wants to know how well this machine does.
The Abyss I ripped a month or so ago and I remember it taking quite a while. The Breakup started this morning around 9:00 am and ran until around 5:00 pm.
The only thing I do have running is iTunes. I quit DVD player as soon as it launches when I insert the disk.

I've ripped three additional DVD's this morning so far. It is showing I am now getting an average of about 70 fps which means it takes about half the length of the movie to rip the DVD. I assume this is good performance.
I did notice that I accidentally bought a full frame version of The Break Up, the one that took several hours. Maybe this is why it was taking so long. If I see a disc that slows way down I'll post again to see if anyone can determine why.

sswanson please list ALL of the settings you are using in HB/MF, pictures are acceptable. Making us guess exactly what you are doing is not going to get you any real help.

That makes sense, faster read times on the hard drive than off the CD, but, is the extra time to make the original rip with MacTheRipper going to offset any time saved in the compression with Mediafork.sidechain wrote:MAke sure you are using H.264 the codec is a lot better but slower to encode. Also it the DVD's are ripped to hard drive with something like Mac-the-ripper your encoding speed goes faster as well.
The original poster's machine should get triple the speeds he's posting...I get 30-40fps so far, and a movie always rips in less time than to watch it. My settings are posted in the benchmark forum (Mac Pro 2.66ghz, 4gb Ram thread).
