iPod anamorphic playback

Post by kalafalas »

first im going to start off saying im bad at spelling, bare with me.

onto the problem at hand.

i have a iPhone, iPod Classic, and a Computer i will be wacthing theese movies on. and i am a quality [Censored]. so, i found that if i tweak the iPod high res to loose anamorphic 720, auto crop, 1 pass, 2000 kbps i get a perfect, origonal dvd looking picture on all three devices. but theres one problem. theese files play flawlessly on my iPhone, my Computer, but not my iPod. it will play, but it will strangly stutter. there will be consistant lines across the screen every once and a while, mostly when i change the volume or use any form of the interface. i think the processor cant handle it. but if i set it to loose anamorphic 640, 2000 kbps 1 pass it will play fine on all three, and i guess im fine with the way it looks on my computer. but im unnerved, because i encoded the simpsons movie to the loose 640, and it came out at a weird resolution, 771 x 320. but when i do 720, its a regular 854 x 480. but the thing is that, when i rent movies on iTunes, there 854 x 480, so i assume there 720 loose. but the ones i buy on iTunes play fine on my iPod. so i thought, maybe its the bitrate. i tryed pulling it down to 1500, same problem with the 720 loose from handbreak. so i cant understand why the videos wont work. any suggestions? the only diffrence on my encodes (loose 720, 1550 kbps) and the itunes encodes are A: theres is prolly 2-pass (im using 1 pass because 2 pass messed up for me, and it takes to long to encode) and B: there audio is 128, mine is 160.

i read that i should post some more information so here goes:
i am running Handbreak 0.9.2, on windows vista. i am on a e1505 laptop with a 2.0 ghz inter core 2 duo processor, with 3 gb or ram, and a ATI x1400 video card. and here is the activity log (i dont know what any of it means, but if it helps you guys here you go)

Re: iPod anamorphic playback and iTunes store resolution

Post by Cavalicious »

First of all, don't start out your post demanding to be responded to a certain way. You get what you get, and if you would have read the rules, you would have supplied an Activity log of a troubled encode.

So, that said... Read the Rules and read the sticky at the top of this forum about How to get questions answered.

Without an activity log, you are out of luck, but there's nothing wrong with your audio setting. The Classic is capable of remarkably high bitrates, so that isn't the issue, either.

As per the Sticky...

Information you should post:

It wouldn't hurt to copy/paste/answer/edit this form (the relevant parts):
  • Detailed description of issue: Complete sentences, please.
    Environment: (linux, mac, windows)
HB Version: (0.9.1 or 0.9.2) (SVN/Snapshot Builds are not supported)
Verbose activity logging: (see preferences to turn on) VERY IMPORTANT! Please use code tags when posting any activity logs. (MacGui Instructions)(WinGui Instructions)

Please enclose the encode log in "Code" Brackets. There is a button on the posting screen to do this.
Also, if the encode log is too long for the forum, please post it on pastebin.ca or similar pastebin site and provide a URL.

awe, c'mon. Just open the activity window and copy and paste what it has in it into your forum post. Barring an ability to do that, we really cannot help you much.

I'd also be interested in whether the experts see anything wrong with the settings the OP used. I'm very grateful that Handbrake works as well as it does with so many options for tweaking, but given the number of duplicate posts about single files for iPhone/AppleTV/iPod I think it would save the developers/forum moderators a lot of aggravation if the next version of Handbrake had a preset that was specifically labelled for this purpose. I know the standard reply is to use the iPod Hi-Res preset, but because that is compatible with older iPods, it produces lower quality files than are required for compatibility with current devices (I own a 3G nano, an iPhone and also watch movies on my 24" iMac).

Many people are looking for a higher quality file (resolution and bit rate) that will play on current iPods/iPhones but will also look crisper for FrontRow/AppleTV viewing. There are various custom settings on these forums, but some of these rely on features not yet in the official release of Handbrake. So, including a new preset is my suggestion to save people becoming annoyed with the same thing being asked over and over again.
Thanks for all the development work you experts have done on Handbrake!

Well, first off these:

Code: Select all

*** libdvdread: CHECK_VALUE failed in ifo_read.c:1568 ***
*** for c_adt->cell_adr_table[i].vob_id <= c_adt->nr_of_vobs ***
Typically indicate that HandBrake is having issues reading your source. Normally if I see these upon scan, I figure I need to re-rip the source with some different software. However it does appear that you were able to complete an encode regardless. so ...

You changed the preset to use 2000 kbps average bitrate but ..

Code: Select all

[00:15:32] + video bitrate 2000 kbps, pass 0
You did *not* change the vbv buffer settings in the advanced options, especially vbv-maxrate, which cannot be lower than the average bitrate

Code: Select all

[00:15:32] + x264 options: level=30:bframes=0:cabac=0:ref=1:vbv-maxrate=1500:vbv-bufsize=2000:analyse=all:me=umh:subme=6:no-fast-pskip=1
.. or you get warned that ...

Code: Select all

x264 [warning]: max bitrate less than average bitrate, ignored.
which tells you that your buffer limits are being ignored. What this means is that even though your encode will average 2000 kbps, in all likelihood you have short term bitrate spikes much higher, which is probably making the iPod stutter. Now I know that some have found the iPod to be able to handle very high bitrates, a movie like the Transformers could, imho produce bitrate spikes that could cause stuttering.

And just to note this:

Code: Select all

[00:17:49] sync: got 2989 frames, 3001 expected
[00:17:50] Reader has exited early, inserting silence.
Also indicates to me that this particular source could stand to be pre-ripped.

Having said all of that, I am not sure why you are seeing issues with your loose anamorphic. If the 640 x 460 loose works, then use it. I do not have an iPod Classic ( and afaik no developer does ) so have no way to specifically test your settings on the device. Sorry.

wow dynaflash, i dident understand a word you just said. it seems u fixed my problem (did you?), but i dont know how, can you tell me what to do to fix it? like in the interface. althought, i did take one thing out of it, i just changed the vbv-maxrate to 2000. ill see if that helps, i have no idea what it means but hopefully it helps.

omgomgomgomogmomg thank you thank you thank you thank you dynaflash soooo mmmuuuccchhH!!! changing the vbv-maxrate to 2000 fixed it all! not only does it looks better, it works perfectly of all 4 devices! with the 720 resolution! but this thing with the ripping program, it seems to work fine, it encodes it. the only thing im worred about, if i use a diffrent ripper, will it speed up the encode cause right now it crawls at 20fps. right now im using DVD shrink, telling it not to change the bitrate, and telling it not to rip anything but the main movie. any thoughts?

ok scracth that. it dident stutter with the 1 chapter test, but when i excoded the whole simpsons movie, in that format with the 2000 vbr-maxrate it still stuttered. not NEARLY as much, but it still stuttered. it stuttered more when using strict, but when i put it to loose 720 it stuttered less. any suggestions to stop the stuttering competly? the only way i can think of is putting the resolution back to 640 loose, but i dont want to do that. i want my 720! heres a activity log :)

Re: iPod anamorphic playback

Post by kalafalas »

new found info: when i play back the movie in "fit to screen" mode on my ipod, it dosent stutter, or have antialising problems. when fit to screen is off, (when it has the black bars and shows the whole frame) it stutters (mostly only when i change the volume) and has pretty much no antialising. im not worried bout the antialising, whats a problem not on the handbreak side. im worried anout the stuttering. hopefully that can help a little.

Having never seen this happen, can you reproduce it on another/similar device (i.e. another Nano or Classic)? I wonder if you are dealing with defective firmware or hardware here.

allright ill try with another iPod to see if my iPod is the problem. my guess is the processor or videocard is defective cause i did a restore and that disent help. also, quick question, what would be the diffrence is bitrate spikes, and over all quality in "vbv-maxrate=2500:vbv-bufsize=2000" VS. "vbv-maxrate=2000:vbv-bufsize=2000"?

Either setting is within tolerances for all iPods. You will spike somewhat higher and enjoy slightly higher quality with the former setting (I no longer have the formula - dynaflash, can you run those numbers through and see what the maxrate is?), but it should not cause stuttering in any event.

If your device is functioning properly, you should actually be able to get away with CRF at something on the order of 68% without having to do VBV buffering/ratecontrol. The latest-gen devices really are very capable and tolerant when it comes to bitrate. On my iPod Touch, I stopped doing VBV a long time ago and do everything as straight CRF and never looked back.

yeah the vids work fine on my iPhone whcith led me to believe it was the processor that cant handel it. but if other ipods are fine, maybe i just wore mine out? and i dont like constant, takes more space.

hmmmm is this normal? when doing a encode with maxrate at 2000 and bufsize at 2000, transformers spiked to 12000. is that normal? shouldent it not let it spike past 4000? im using vlc's staticits thingy

*yay* problem fixed! im not sure HOW this fixed the problem, but when i encoded the video to 3000 abr, with a naxrate of 5000 and a bufsize of 3000 it dident stutter. im not sure HOW that fixed it, but it did! now weve run into a diffrent problem, space. theese movies are huge. i dont want them to be huge. 2000 looked good enough to me, even though this looks like a exact copy of a DVD. ill encode one movie, and find out how much space it takes and see if its bareable. im guessing about 3-4 GB a movie. the problem is, the dvd vob files are like 4-6 gb a movie, so this dosent help much. im looking for 2 gb a movie, whicth is what 2000 gave me. but it stuttered. argggg i have to figure this out. so this rules out all possiblitys of my ipod being faulty, cause the higher bitrate worked fine. maybe it has to bo with the ratio of the maxrate and bufsize, contrasting to the ABR rate that made it work? i have no idea.

ok, thx to all of you and your great help, its fixed. it i put the ABR to 2500, the bufsize to 2500, and the maxrate at 3000, i get a kinda big file, but not to big, it looks crystal clear, exactly like DVD, and it dosent stutter on my classic. thanks to all, and good night!

The reason I suggested CRF is because I'm averaging about 1.5GB per 2 hours at 68% on 'average' content. It will vary depending on complexity and noise, but that is a reasonable-case average, with average bitrates in the realm of 1500kbps. If you are fine with the higher bitrate, go with it. =)

so i am very happy with my new encodes, they look incredible for H.264, and will look very pretty on my soon to be baught apple TV. but even thought they wereent stuttering last night, there stuttering now. but my ipod os cold right now, maybe if it warmes up it will stop stuttering. if it dosent, i will test it on another iPod of the same kind, and if that dosent stutter, its time to go to the apple store and say "i dident know what happened"

so i did all that work for nothing, and im going to have to restart. y do you say? because i found that if i build off the iphone preset, instead of the ipod preset, there isent anything about vbv anything in the advansed tab, if i set the bitrate to 2000 and then use 720 loose, and audio to 160, it works flawlessly. on all three machenes, and i get smaller files. the funny thing is, i found this out AFTER i encoded everything and deleted the .vob's. time to start over!

Welcome to the wonderful world of "pushing the limits". I say this because if you'd used the built in presets, you would not have had to do this. On the plus side, once you get it how you want it you will be golden. :)

Footnote: how do you think we come up with the presets ? The same way, alot of trial and error. Nothing like hands on to find out what you can and cannot do.
