So you can get pure AC3 audio direct from the DVD if your gear supports it, and standard Dolby Surround II/stereo if it doesn't, since ATV can't do downmixing itself.

which does AppleTV support? i was under the assumption that as far as AC3 sound is concerned any tv is capable of this, and should then be the only audio?... what am i missing... does this not result in larger files and two times the sound data?
Not two times the sound data... AAC is at max 160kbps, AC3 448kbps (yes, I know there are a few 640kbps DVDs out there as well). In all honesty, audio makes up a small part of the finished file.

AAC+AC3 is how Apple has decided to encode their files... this maintains compatibility with devices that cannot decode AC3.

Visualhub can only export a file with AC3 to .mov and does not include an AAC track. I have no idea about the others.

Yes, exactly.

I tried AAC+AC3 encode once but my AppleTV only played AAC track and there was no way of telling it to switch to AC3 (I can see double DD symbol light on my receiver for AC3 sound). So I ended up encoding only AC3 into my DVD rips.

I am wondering what went wrong with my AAC+AC3 encodes? I used AppleTV preset with the change only in avg. bitrate.

Without an activity log, there is no way to know.

If it would matter to me I would report an error with complete log. But since encode was fine, both audio tracks were present (one AAC and other AC3) as seen in Gspot and I only tried one encode with double audio tracks and I only encode for my appleTV I saw no purpose to continue using 2 same audio tracks. Now I'm only using AC3 on movies with good 5.1 audio (read SciFi, Fantasy & Action) and AAC with DPII downmix on other movies (yes my Onkyo is capable of DPII "upmix" so I still get decent surround).
