Every time i tweak the file it breaks it for one or the other.
You can do mpeg 4 but it looks lousy compared to h.264.
I have a nano and a 3.93 psp.

There is no way to encode h.264 for both PSP and iPod

Re: There is no way to encode h.264 for both PSP and iPod
If you want to watch it on PSP at full res as well as on your iPod, then the real problem is to do with CABAC. The iPod won't play CABAC videos, yet the PSP needs CABAC if you want to view your movies at full resolution on your PSP.

The PSP requires CABAC for full-resolution encodes? Seriously?

Yep Needs to be AVC MP4 as well.
You can use standard MP4 if you want to play video on both PSP and iPod. However, not only is the video quality lower than that of AVC, the PSP also blows up the picture because of the bigger screen, making things slightly blurry.

Re: There is no way to encode h.264 for both PSP and iPod
then how is it possible that iSquint has the ability to output H.264 files that work on both the iPod and PSP? Why can't this be done with handbrake?
I too can only get handbrake's H.264 settings to work with either the iPod OR the PSP, but not both.
but if you use iSquint's H.264 "iPod" settings the resulting file works perfectly on both. the "TV" settings don't work on the PSP though.
so what is iSquint doing that handbrake can not? Even though this puts the max resolution down to the iPod's screen of 320x240, which I know is a little worse than the PSP can display, but I just want to make my video files that will work on both devices without having to encode it twice.
since my iPod 5G is my primary video player I rip to it's highest end settings right now and then if I am going to use the PSP I just drop my iPod compatible file in iSquint.
MPEG4 seems to be the only way I can rip from handbrake that works on both.

Re: There is no way to encode h.264 for both PSP and iPod
oh, I am sure it can be done on HB *if* iSquint can do it. But frankly no one has spent the time trying afaik. I don't think any of the dev's or testers has a psp so it has not been explored. HB has a ton of settings. If you find the "magic sauce" do share.
Re: There is no way to encode h.264 for both PSP and iPod
i have tested it quite extensively, but i can not find the magic setting for both using H.264. it just seems that no matter what I do CABAC has to be on for the PSP to play it and off for the iPod to play it. but since iSquint can do it I know it is possible for an H.264 file to exist that works on both devices.
Re: There is no way to encode h.264 for both PSP and iPod
Well, I'm sure you could just post a question on the iSquint forum asking for the command line generated by the appropriate setting? iSquint (and Visualhub) use ffmpeg for the backend encoding IIRC. That would give the devs here something to work from.dwishbone wrote:i have tested it quite extensively, but i can not find the magic setting for both using H.264. it just seems that no matter what I do CABAC has to be on for the PSP to play it and off for the iPod to play it. but since iSquint can do it I know it is possible for an H.264 file to exist that works on both devices.
