iPhone Chapter naming

Post by JerryWinter »

This has to have been covered. Sorry for asking, but I searched forever and couldn't find anything on it. I've converted several DVDs to m4v files where I named the chapters. The naming works beautifully everywhere except on my iPhone. My iPhone chapter names in the Chapter Guide still read Chapter 1: Chapter 001, Chapter 2: Chapter 002, etc.

What am I doing wrong? The iPhone Chapter Guide works great for movies bought from iTunes.

Thanks.

Here's the activity log for the entire conversion. As I mentioned, the Chapter Naming works fine in iTunes/Quicktime. I expected someone would just tell me this is a Handbrake/iPhone limitation.

How do the chapters appear in iTunes/Quicktime?

On the iPhone, they did things slightly differently in that they append "Chapter #: " before the chapter title, so if your chapter names are "Chapter ###" then while it looks okay in iTunes/Quicktime, the iPhone will display them differently and they will look rather odd. Normally when you name the chapters something more meaningful than the defaults, you get something like this on the iPhone:

Chapter 1: Opening
Chapter 2: Part A
Chapter 3: Part B
Chapter 4: Ending
Chapter 5: Preview

And this in iTunes/Quicktime:

Opening
Part A
Part B
Ending
Preview

The Chapter Guide on my iPhone shows chapters exactly as it would if I had never entered the chapters manually into Handbrake. That is:

Chapter 1: Chapter 001
Chapter 2: Chapter 002
Chapter 3: Chapter 003
Chapter 4: Chapter 004
...

With a purchased iTunes movie (Cars for example) the Chapter Guide on the iPhone very nicely displays chapters as named by the content provider. That is:

Chapter 1: Dinoco 400
Chapter 2: Victory Lane
Chapter 3: Rust-eze
Chapter 4: "Life is a Highway"
...

The Chapters for the Handbraked content occurs in iTunes exactly as you suggest ... chapters nicely listed with the addition of an ordinal number in front of each chapter. The same content when moved over to the iPhone doesn't show the named chapters.

I am unable to duplicate this on my iPhone; all chapter titles are showing up normally.

I should also state that these were encoded with a SVN build after the .9.2 release, so it is possible something was fixed after the last public release. You might check the timeline located in the development section.

FWIW, I have encoded using 0.9.2, and I am able to see my chapter titles just fine on my iPhone. I'm sorry I don't have any other suggestions. If you change the chapter titles in MetaX, do they show up on the iPhone?
