xbox 360- black screen

Post by thundar »

Wow, it seems like I'm always coming here with some kind of problem  . Well, this time it's a "black screen" I get. Sorry, I have no handbrake log. And sorry if this post is a bit long. Oh yea, and sorry if the whole xbox 360 thing gets a bit tedious for some. Anyway, I posted THIS up at xboscene. It was in response to another guy who has the black screen problem on some of his vids. Here goes.
------------
I use Handbrake to encode to h264 (xbox or ps3 preset), and I also get SOME videos that produce the "black screen". I don't get audio, though. Strange, indeed. I'm trying to figure this out, as well. Maybe it's that damn mp4box? I swear I have more trouble using mp4box when it comes to muxing audio and video streams. So now I use mp4creator, and I have (so far) 100% success when trying to fix videos that the 360 refuses to play (these particular videos are of a different problematic nature, but still related to muxing.). Right now, I'm testing those "black screen" videos with mp4creator to see if I have any luck. I'll report back if I have any success. In the meantime, if anyone could shed any light on the problem here...... I'm using dvd+r discs and usb drives.
------------
mp4creator was a no go on the black screen videos. Also, (I know I'm an idiot for not testing the video before) the same video(s) doesn't play back with Media Player Classic. The same black screen with no audio. It "seems" to freeze. Doesn't want to start playing. It plays fine with VLC, though. But then again...VLC plays just about everything. So...could this be just a plain ol' bad video encode? Is it spiking? What is "spiking", anyway? I'm lost. Some of this technical stuff is simply above my head and below my knees. It's fun trying to track down the problem, but it's also a pain. I want to know why?!....for future encodes. Anyway, below is an AVINAPTIC report on the original Handbrake encode. Also, I DID use yamb to combine a movie that was split onto 2 dvds. Maybe yamb is the culprit? It's Lord of the Rings part 3. Maybe someone can shed some light on all this? The avinaptic report:

Thanks for moving into the proper section.....I think.

So is this problem too tough for you all?

By the way, Media Player Classic uses quite a bit of cpu power TRYING to play the video. Another clue, perhaps?

Come on, jbrjake, you're always helping me out. Where you at?

update:

I installed ffdsow. The video now plays in Media Player Classic. It stutters, though. Doesn't play in the xbox. I guess it was a bad encode.
