Re: ATV 2.x Advanced Settings (All Sources)

Post by belloq »

Using dynaflash's advanced string, I have been able to get atv-playable encodes of both standard DVD titles and HDTV streams with AAC/AC3 audio. I've done this with both CQ of 60-62%, and ABR settings as well. (I usually use ABR of 3000 for DVD and 3800 for HD to control file size.) HDTV sources were both 720p and 1080i. When encoding the 1080i, of course, I have detelecine default and deinterlace slower filters enabled.

atv is v2.3.

I have also tried a slightly modified string:

Code: Select all

ref=4:mixed-refs=1:bframes=6:direct=auto:no-fast-pskip=1:me=umh:subq=7:analyse=all:8x8dct=1:merange=32:b-adapt=2
The encode takes longer (sorry, didn't capture stats, and the computer is used for other things at the same time anyway), but I'm not in that much of a hurry.

I can only report, at this time, that everything so far has played with no issues, including scanning forward and backward. I have not done perceived quality "tests" yet.

if i were you, i'd take merange back down -- I did a lot of testing with it and it just doesn't really help at all, much less any.
You're also probably better off taking b-frames down 2 or 3 and raising to subq 9 to get rdo on b-frames, because the chances you'll get 6 bframes in a row are pretty low except on extraordinary footage

You do get RDO on b-frames @ 7. At 9 you get rate-distortion refinement (on all frames), which uses RDO to refine both motion vectors and intra prediction modes, instead of just on partition decision.

Sometimes, I wish I had to time/mind space to understand WTH all this really means, because it sounds interesting and useful when looking to encode a maximal quality video for the ATV. However, ATM, I just don't ... so I'll have to live in a sparse fog (not dense, I understand some stuff) of ignorance. I'm quite happy to get a similar quality encode as I got in the past with a reduction in file size, or a much better encode at a similar file size.

From what I read above, I'll test taking b-frames down to 3 and raise the subq to 9. Thanks for the tip on the merange. I'm stuck in the mentality that more/bigger is better. And perhaps that may be so, if I am unconcerned at all with encode time...?

Thanks for the tips.

I agree on dropping the bframes, it would be very rare indeed to see any more than 4 (and that is very infrequent) on most sources and it causes badapt-2 to really slow down in my testing anyway.

Hi

Can somebody post an activity log for a high profile encode that the ATV will accept. I would like to compare it to mine as I can not get anything to sync to the ATV with these high profile settings. I am using ATV firmware 2.3, latest itunes and Handbrake 0.93 CLI but am having no luck whatsoever when I include 8x8dct.

Thanks

What exactly would "extraordinary footage" be?
not familiar enough with video encoding to say exactly, I assume very stationary settings, like a recording of a lecture or something

Belloq, thanks for the activity log. Still having no luck with these high profile encodes. I assume you have, but, have you had success with standard DVD also?

Did you post above what happens to you? Is it in iTunes or the AppleTV that exhibits the issue? What are the symptoms? What happens?

I have done a DVD title or two recently. Here is one below (in which I stupid didn't detelecine and let it get to the original 24fps):

Re: ATV 2.x Advanced Settings (All Sources)

My symptoms are that the high profile encode imports into, and plays in iTunes. However, when I select to sync the same movie to ATV I get a warning exclamation mark next to the Apple TV icon in the devices menu. When I click on the exclamation mark it informs me that the file was not copied to the Apple TV because it cannot be played on this apple tv.

I had a similar problem recently with some Disney titles. The problem was the framerate setting "same as source" would result in a file with a framerate of 36.75. You can check the file in Quicktime Player to see what framerate iTunes will see. These files would play fine in iTunes, but would not sync to the AppleTV. You might check to see if that is your problem.

Thank you for pointing this out to me, I have never seen this before. The frame rate was 36.75 for some strange reason.

It seems to be a problem with Disney titles. I've had it happen to me a few times. The solution is to force the framerate to a specific number. I've been using 29.97 for Disney DVDs.

If you notice in my encode log, you'll see that even though the source is 23.976fps, I still force it to 29.97. This is probably bad practice, and I should be forcing it to 23.976 and not leave it at "same as source." Perhaps I'll try that, but yes, when encoding for the AppleTV, I typically find that if I do not force the fps, it will wander, and sometimes to a rate that is unsupported. Same goes for bitrate. AppleTV specs are max 5Mbps, but I'm sure that this, just like the resolution + fps spec, is a little loose.

I have a bit of bad news to report in that two recent encodes with fast-movement are making the atv (2.3) stutter/drop frames using the adv string I've posted above last. Specifically: ref=4:bframes=3:me=umh:b-adapt=2:direct=auto:mixed-refs=1:subq=9:merange=16:analyse=all:8x8dct=1:no-fast-pskip=1 with 20 RF. I'm not sure which part to start adjusting first, but I'm going to start with turning off cabac. The encode (detelecined 1080i down to 1280x720) came out to ~4300kbps, which should be well within the range for the atv, so it's struggling on something else I think.

I wouldn't use cabac for hd stuff. Too heavy.

Dynaflash,

Upon review of this and several other related threads, it would appear that you are still using your recommended 'Advanced AppleTV' settings from about 1/31/09. To wit, I have been using and loving them. So that we're clear, here are your settings from 1/31 that I still use today:

ref=3:mixed-refs=1:bframes=3:direct=auto:no-fast-pskip=1:me=umh:subq=7:analyse=all:b-adapt=2:8x8dct=1

As always, I am using 62% CRF for SD DVD sources, and letting detelecine be set to No.

So, question is, do you still advocate those settings as being the best, highest video quality settings for the AppleTV? Inquiring minds want to know - never mind those that enjoy the Champagne of Beers :-) Cheers!

My current settings for the AppleTV for HDTV sources are slightly different, with reference frames set to 4, turned off no-fast-p-skip as x264 encoding seems to do a really good job with slight gradients as it is. Without the no-pskip, there's a bit of a speed boost, but if I find an encode looks crappy in areas it helps, I turn it on manually. I have subq=9 all the time (yes, it really reduces the fps), and I usually have merange=32. HDTV quality set to RF21 for 1080i and 20.5 for 720p. Although, for some sources with fast action, I've had to set the RF all the way to 22.5 because the pans and jerky motion shots, or scenes with fire in them especially, will cause the AppleTV to stutter the playback. VLC reports data rates hit over 10,000 for RF22 still on specific scenes.

For DVD sources, I still turn cabac on and the AppleTV seems to do just fine.

Pretty much unchanged though I have dropped

Code: Select all

no-fast-pskip=1
since afaict ever since vaq in x264 it's benefits are negligible afaiac. Other than that I still pretty much use those settings for my atv encodes.

Thank you sir, makes sense, I guess dropping the 'nofast pskip' means a slightly faster encode, yes?
