64bit not compatible with iPhone?

Post by entropy1980 »

I started encoding my DVD collection in the new AAC+AC3 (thanks Handbrake guys!) and I see a lot people are encoding as 64-bit, however I have noticed in my limited testing that it seems having them encoded as 64bit seems to break iPhone compatibility. Anyone else having similar issues? My goal is to create great looking AAC+Ac3 that will look awesome on my AppleTv and work on the iPhone. Can anyone else confirm this?

That's correct - I am unaware of any portable playback device that supports 64-bit offsets.

Thanks for the response ... good to know... guess I will keep my encodes 32bit unless they end up being jumbo sized (I'm looking at you LOTR triology!)

Anyone putting a >4GB encode on an iPhone is a total masochist ;P

Besides adding another step for people adapting the ATV preset for use in more situations, this is going to raise issues with the forthcoming Universal Apple preset. The ATV preset already uses 2500 and that's with b-frames. Getting the same quality without b-frames while never going above 4GB and preserving the AC3 along with AAC is going to be....slow.

Slow as in time to encode or slow as in progress in making it happen from a programming perspective?

The former.

Speed, Quality, Size: Choose 2.
