File size reduction

Post by sydh »

I have imported an MP4 file and keeping all the settings as same as source, the resulting file has dropped from 691Mb to 20Mb. I was trying to get Handbrake to replicate the file as I am having issues with file compatability in Premiere, but that's another story. How do I export the file to be identical to the original. I am working with 4K but Handbrake has no presets.
And yes, I am new to Handbrake and this forum.
I am on the latest version.
Win 10 64

If you want to use the file in premier try the production presets.

I was trying to get Handbrake to replicate the file
Handbrake is an encoder, so it won't do that.

None of the presets include 4K or anything that high. I'm trying not to degrade the quality.

I thought it might be possible to rewrite the file with just a tiny little change.

The Production Standard/Max presets have no resolution limitation, and are specifically configured for this purpose.

What tiny change are you trying to make? An mp4 muxer may be the solution, like mp4box or ffmpeg.

Re: File size reduction

The whole problem originated with a file being rejected by Premiere. "This type of file is not supported, or the required codec is not installed."
When I passed the file through Handbrake, it then accepted it, albeit with a massive drop in file size.
Someone on the Premiere forum had a look at the file info in MediaInfo and stated it was recoded in H265, but loading the file into Handbrake states it is H264. I'm waiting for a reply as to why they think it is H265. I don't want H265 as it is not good for editing but there is nothing on the camera that even mentions this in it's settings.

handbrake says the encoder is HEVC, which is h265.

This is making sense now. Someone on the Premiere forum has just sent me a link to read concerning HEVC and H265. It could be that HEVC is not an option for me. Can Handbrake convert H264 to H265 or am I simplifying this?

I'm really surprised that Premier hasn't added h265 support by now, since so many devices can output it. Even Apple products.

It doesn't even support VFR input, which is much older than HEVC.

I understand the 2020 version included H265 but I keep reading that H265 is more difficult to edit. Not sure if that is true.

When you're editing video, I expect most editors have expanded the video stream from the compressed format, to work on the "raw" video. The original might be in [insert format here], but what you're editing is not. The result would then be output as [insert format here].
