Preset advice for DV home videos

Hello,

I have a bunch of families video tapes, recorded on DV and MiniDV. I transferred them using Firewire from tape to file.

Handbrake identifies them as "720x576 (768x576), 4:3, 25 FPS, 2 Audio Tracks, 0 Subtitle Tracks", file tells me they are "DIF (DV) movie file (PAL)".

As they are pretty big, I want to transcode them using Handbrake (1.3.3 on Linux) and kindly ask for your advice on presets:

Original source is a home camcorder, therefore the source is not of very high quality

My first choice would be something like "Fast 720p30".

Does it make sense to change the Video->Framerate to 25 to match the source?
Should I tick Dimensions -> Storage Geometry -> Optimal for source?

Thanks a lot!
Florian

No, you also have a preset called "Fast 576 p25."
Why change a bunch of stuff, when this preset was designed to do exactly what you want?

Oh, yes, that looks fitting.

I wasn't sure if the "Fast 576 p25" refers to the first (720) or second (576) dimension.

Best Thanks!

It always refers to the height, which is the independent variable in imaging.
720p, for instance, means 1280x720, which is HD.

Fast is great for quick throwaway encodes, kids tablets, etc.
