720 x 576 is the PAL DVD storage resolution, or SAR. It is never meant to be viewed at those dimensions!
The PAL DVD display resolution, or DAR, is entirely different, depending if 4:3 or 16:9.
Cropping is something else, a feature that you are completely capable of turning off.

Here, read all about it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel_aspect_ratio

Use manual and set it to zero on all sides.

It's dumb, but so is most of the GUI.

Autocrop cuts off black borders in your Cine format, which yours may be. It saves space, that's about all.
