Large MKV files on iphone: No reliable Rewind or FF, and regular freezing

Post by stu_m »

Description of problem or question:

I love Handbrake and VLC. I just graduated to a new XS Max iphone from a 5s expressly for watching movies with VLC during travel in several foreign languages with foreign subs, for language learning and practice.

Before getting the new phone, I used Handbrake to create large, very rich resolution mkv files with sometimes as much as 9 audio files and 5 or 6 different subtitle languages. (Such hi res for future use with future monitors and TVs). 3GB to 5GB MKV files were created. Woodstock was kind enough to point out to me in another thread that if I want switchable subtitles, I have to output MKV files. I got the new phone and VLC will in fact play the files on the phone, and I can change the audio and subs, but besides the regular freezing, I cannot reliably rewind or fast forward.

I wonder if the files too big and rich for VLC and/or iOS? Or have I made some wrong choices in Handbrake?

What is your question? Is it this: "I cannot reliably rewind or fast forward. "

Yes, and periodic freezing.

Is there the same issue in VLC under macOS?

Thank you for responding. Great question that I considered this morning. The answer is no, there are no such problems playing the same MKV files in VLC under macOS.

By the way, I also moved VOBs of Field of Dreams (3.9 GB) -- that I created perhaps 12 years ago -- to VLC on the new iphone and they play, rewind, and FF perfectly. (except that I have to play the VOBs individually.)

Don't know if it makes a difference, but I put VLC got onto to the new iphone via the synch I did with it to itunes to get everything from my old phone onto the new phone. I installed VLC on the old iphone 5s a week or so ago. It’s 3.1.9 (325). I would hate to delete and reinstall VLC on the new iphone unless absolutely necessary as I already have transferred almost 90 GB of VOBs onto it with VLCs sharing via wifi!

If you run your MKV through https://mkvtoolnix.download/downloads.html#macosx and re-transfer it to the iPhone, does it help at all?

Sorry for the delay. (I am in the middle of a house move. )

I tried it but it did not help.

For other reasons, I recently had to wipe the phone and restore from icloud. So it's a fresh install of VLC.

If I try to reincode the MKV files with Handbrake, are there any settings I should change? Perhaps a preset that results in a smaller file size for the output file?

Thank you.

AC3 audio has never been very friendly with iPhone, in varying degrees since they were invented.
See if things smooth out with AAC as in the presets. Just something to test.

Thank you again musicvid. Unfortunately, it didn't solve the problem, but it did improve it. No more freezing, but absolutely no rewind function in VLC on the iphone. Interestingly, I also converted VOBs from something else to MP4s with Handbrake, and VLC on the iphone has the same issue: no rewind. However, as I said above, individual VOBs that I moved to the iphone via VLC rewind normally.

And are you still running 9 audio tracks? What if you reduce it to two -- one AC3 and one AAC?
The audio is the only slight "weirdness," the video looks fine,

Hi musicvid, I ran 4 audio tracks last time using only AACs for my English, French, Portuguese, & Spanish. I also did it at 1080p30 rather than 2160p60 4K HEVC Surround.

As I mentioned, I also converted VOBs from something else to MP4s with Handbrake, and VLC on the iphone has the same issue: no rewind. However, as I said above, individual VOBs that I moved to the iphone via VLC rewind normally.

Well, the MP4s rewind perfectly when moved over via itunes and played with AppleTV. Seems to indicate the problem is with VLC rather than Handbrake.

Also rewind works perfectly with files on PlayerXtreme, which plays MKVs. Thank you Rodeo, musicvid, and Handbrake community.
