Deinterlacing Legacy Settings

Description of problem or question:

I have a decent amount of—unfortunately—480i content that I'm archiving as mkv. I had been using a quite outdated version of HandBrake (0.10.x) and finally updated. However, some settings have changed.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

For my content (live music footage), I have found the following legacy settings to provide the best deinterlacing results for such high-motion content:
• Detelecine: Off
• Deinterlace: Deinterlace (as opposed to Decomb)
• "Slower" Deinterlace profile

However, more recent versions have changed the available options. I'm curious what combination of current deinterlacing settings would yield the same (or at least nearly identical) results.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

1.2.2

Operating system and version:

Windows 7 & 8.1, x64

HandBrake Activity Log ***required***:

I know it says "***required***" but logs aren't exactly relevant to my simple question. If this is an absolute must have, I'll gladly provide, but didn't want to needlessly flood my post with useless data.

Could you please post your HB logs, instructions can be found here:

Well, that's also my confusion: logs from 0.10.x, 1.2.2, or both?

Both if possible.

My apologies for being such a noob, but at what point in the process should I provide a log for such an issue?
• Upon opening HandBrake
• After loading media
• After encoding (if here, would a preview render provide the same log info?)

It's not exactly an issue like throwing an error or poor transcoding, so I'm just unsure what info needs to be in the log to be helpful.

Do an encode with both. The activity logs will show us the settings used. You don't have to encode more than a short segment, but do pick the same part of the source for both.

Do the encode with each. Post the logs from each.

My old version still distinguishes between "encode" and "media" logs. I've included the encode log only as it seem obvious that's where my issue lies, but can provide media log if needed.

0.10.5.0 encode log
1.2.2 activity log

For what it's worth: I did try exporting a settings profile from old to new version. However, much of the data seems to be incompatible in new version because many of the settings were either missing (all filters off) or way out of wack (encoder preset jumped from 'Slow' to 'Superfast').

I can obviously see from the 0.10.x log that Yadif is used, so I did the same for encode on 1.2.2 with default preset. Results seem to be similar, but would like an actual technical verification. Otherwise I'll need to spot-check particularly problematic video (flickering candle flames, caucasian hands on a piano, etc.), which will be very time consuming.

May I ask a question?
Why do you prefer Deinterlace to Decomb?
I tested them both in empirical and subjective trials years ago, and again this year and have never looked back. I produced regional musicals and events for 12 years, and shot plenty of pianos and guitars. I agree with you that they present some of the most difficult deinterlacing challenges.

Handbrake Decomb -- Best of Class 2019

Be sure and check the two links contained in that thread for actual temporal and edge definition graphics!

And obviously, be sure to view those tests at native 1080p.

What options would you set if you want to include the interlacing in the encode and NOT deinterlace? That way the TV handles it. This does not seem to be well documented or supported in Handbrake but can it be done and how?

That's correct. Search for old threads on "Fake Interlace," since this program is optimized for streaming and progressive playback.

That said, you have a very old television if it will not take progressive source. Analog perhaps?
