Another Preset Questions- this time for DVD quality

Post by stoc2528 »

Description of problem or question:

Which settings would be close to a "lossless" quality for DVD

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

Handbrake 1.1.0 and 1.2.0

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.04

For many years I've used the old "High Profile" setting but with it being deprecated I've been playing with other presets as well as adjusting things on my own.

99% of my stuff is ripped straight from DVDs. Of those, many are older 4:3 TV seasons (StarTrek TNG, etc) but many are newer DVD movies in some sort of widescreen or letterbox format.

I just ripped 3 movies to try some new setting on. They are:

HQ 480p30 preset with only these changes:

- Cropping = none selected
- Geometry = optimal for source

- Video / Framerate = Optimal for Source
(This means a VFR with the constant 'quality' level at 18

Will these settings be pretty close to a viewably lossless DVD quality? I realize there's some compression but I'm not sure where/how.

Since ripped DVDs don't take up nearly as much space as ripped BluRay, I thought I might start tyring to get the most out of the DVDs

Yes, although I'd leave autocrop on since DVDs have a lot of black bars that will bloat the filesize and are better off removed.
