Cannot save preset, reverts settings

Post by Darkpaw »

Description of problem or question:
I'm trying to save a new preset for an Apple TV, based on the Apple TV 1080p60 Surround preset, but Handbrake keeps reverting my settings to the defaults.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
1. Choose a source video, I used an MKV.
2. Choose "Apple TV 1080p60 Surround" from the supplied presets.
3. Click "Save New Preset..." and give it a name. You should now be editing your new preset, right?
4. Go to the Subtitles tab, and change the first line from "Foreign Audio Search" to "None".
5. Go to the Audio tab, and change the Track value to "None" for the row that has "AC3" as the codec. You should have just one row with "AAC (CoreAudio)" as the audio.

Is the new preset saved at this point? There's no button to actually say, "Hey, I've done my edits to the preset, so go ahead and save it".

6. Choose any other preset, then choose your new preset. Handbrake has reset the audio and subtitle settings back to the defaults.

You now have an exact copy of the original preset. How do I create a preset with my own settings?!

If you were to skip step 3 above, and perform that step after step 5, i.e. make some changes to a preset then save a new one; the new preset simply reverts to the default settings for the given preset anyway, so I can't actually create a new preset with my own settings. I'm sure this worked fine in previous versions.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.2.0

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
macOS 10.14.2 Mojave

You have to update the preset after you make the changes; they are not automatically saved as you edit them.

The Mac user interface doesn't allow in-place saving of presets; you need to set your settings and create a new preset (the button is labeled "Save New Preset…").

Also, subtitle and audio settings for a preset are set via the corresponding panel's "Selection Behavior…" dialog; the audio and subtitle lists in the main panel only affect the current encode.

Thanks for the responses.

This worked fine in previous versions. I never had to click a "Selection Behaviour..." button before; I just made changes and saved as a new preset.

@Woodstock: What are the steps to perform that? I've tried both making changes and saving as new (creates duplicate of existing preset), and saving a new preset then making changes (changes nothing in the new preset I just created).

@Rodeo: As mentioned, if I make changes then click "Save New Preset..." the new preset uses the defaults, not what I've actually selected.

This changed about a year ago because the old behavior didn't provide enough information from the user to HB about what to do in different cases.

That's exactly what is expected if you haven't made changes to the audio/subtitle defaults before saving them.
