Description of problem or question:

I am a newbie. I wanted to know if someone can briefly explain the various Presets. Specifically, which Preset would apply to watching an .MP4 movie on a Mac 21.5", Apple TV 3 and 4, iPad Mini and iPhone 8 Plus? Perhaps, there is one or two Presets that would cover all of them.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

1.1.2

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Sierra 10.12.6

HandBrake Activity Log ***required*** (see How-to get an activity log)

Code: Select all

Please replace this text with the contents of your log file between the two code tags - OR - provide a pastebin URL in place of these 3 lines.

Apple 1080p30 Surround supports all of your devices.

The documentation has a technical description of presets. https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/1.1.0/tech ... esets.html

Hovering your mouse over a devices preset in the popover menu (accessed via the toolbar icon) will show a tooltip explaining which models are supported. I'll make a note to improve the documentation in this regard.

Let us know if you have further questions.

You recommend using 1080p30 surround. Can you elaborate on these settings:

Very Fast 1080p30
Fast
HQ
Super HQ

What is the difference between all four of them? Is it how quickly the video is converted?

I recommend the Apple 1080p30 Surround preset, which is in the Devices category. The presets you mention are part of the General category.

To answer your question, the General presets range from high speed encoding at lower quality, to slower speed encoding at higher quality. File size varies depending on the source and quality setting of each preset; higher quality presets use a lower RF value and can create larger files. See https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/1.1.0/work ... ality.html

Got it. I was looking in the wrong category. One last question. By choosing "Apple 1080p30 Surround", does the screen size change with the device?

For example, if I watch a .MP4 movie on a Mac obviously the screen is larger and will look different than on a phone or Apple TV. By choosing that Preset, do I deal with black bars on the sides or do I have to adjust the movie to match the screen of the device?

Thanks.

HandBrake removes any black bars in the video, so any you see are technically not there; they're added on playback to avoid stretching the video. This is normal.

Filling the entire display requires either zooming or stretching the video, neither of which is ideal. All HandBrake will do is give you standard (up to) 1080p video. What your playback device does with it after that is up to it; generally they preserve the aspect ratio and add black bars.

The Apple 4K preset should work with Plex, in addition to Apple devices.
