4K streaming at home... looking for some recommendations

Post by deathtical »

What I'm working with...

Visio P65 w/ Amazon Fire Cube - Streaming with the Kodi app - using wifi
Visio M55 w/ Nvidia Shield TV - Streaming with the Kodi app - using 1Gb/s wired connection

What I'm encoding to...

For all my 4K encodes I am using the Roku 4K 60fps preset. The only thing I change is the audio settings. I don't down convert my audio streams, I set them to the appropreate passthrough option (ie: True-HD set to True-HD passthrough).

I just upgraded to the above 4K TVs this past weekend so it was my first chance to really watch my 4K encodes. I have noticed that I get some different behavior. Here are my examples...

The Matrix: on the AFC and it ran fine until I got to the schene where they are going to save Morphious. I got a lot of stuttering and buffering.

Ender's Game: wathed on the AFC I had no problems and no buffering.

Blade Runner 2049: on the NSTV about every 15 - 20 min it would hang for about 30 seconds and then boot me back out to the menu.

The Professional: on the NSTV I had no problems and no buffering.

What I would like to know is this...

Am I using the best preset for this setup? (I am currently running an encode using the Roku 4K 30fps with the quality bumped up to 22 to test later of Blade Runner 2049 since that's the one I had the worst issues with)
Is there a better preset you would recommend?

My concerns are image quality with smooth, consistant play back without altering the audio streams. I think the only 4K presets currently in HB are the two "Roku" ones. I know you guys like to see encode logs but these were encoded quite a while back and I doubt I have them anymore. Will check when I get home. I also updated to teh latest stable HB build last night before starting my Roku 4K 30fps encode. I think the previous ones where done on 1.1.1.0 or 1.1.0.1, again, will need to check when I get home. File size dowsn't appear to be an issue as The Professional was the largest of the 4 films and it played flawlessly.

Thank you

I have some ideas, but of course need the activity log to confirm rather than guessing blindly.

I know. Just got a chance to look and it looks like the only log I have is from the test Roku 4K 30fps encode that just finished.

Re: 4K streaming at home... looking for some recommendations

So... the Roku 4K 30fps played with no problems. Even with the quality bumped up to 22. I guess that will be my new preset of choice. I am just curious though, what were the ideas that you had? I'm guessing you've either seen or heard of a similar situation. I'm happy to experiment a bit if it means getting the "perfect" encode.

Thanks

Oh, I also found it amusing that the 30fps file was 150% the size of the 60fps file. Not sure how that math works out, but storage isn't a big concern at the moment.

using wifi
You would be wise to focus on that, and only that, for the time being.
Router in the same room as the TV and server device. Minimum 300 Mbps actual measured sustainable bidirectional throughput. Necessary, not optional for reliable 4k.
Router advertised speeds are meaningless!
WiFi is your bottleneck and one cause of stalls and dropped streams. You can drop your quality or improve your throughput, whichever sounds best to you. When fixed, you will have a bit more flexibility in your encoding settings. Also don't use a WD USB as a network media server. They drop streams frequently, while others are not as bad.

Here's a useful .bat file to help you. Fping.exe is required in your user account folder.

Code: Select all

@ECHO ON
@ECHO *
@ECHO Router Ping Utility (routerping.bat)
@ECHO Useful for comparing throughput using various WiFi channels (1, 6, 11)
@ECHO Also 5GHz band
@ECHO *
@ECHO EDIT FILE WITH YOUR ROUTER'S IP AND LOCATION OF fping.exe (required)
@ECHO Test takes 2+ minutes to complete (2000 pings)
@ECHO To stop - type Control-C.
@ECHO *
@pause

@REM Add (-L filename.txt) to create a Logfile.
@REM See fping documentation for more parameters.
@REM EDIT YOUR ROUTER IP AND PATH TO fping.exe HERE
@C:\Users\****\fping.exe 192.168.1.1 -n 2000 -s 32768 -t 1 -L router.txt

@ECHO *
@ECHO More than 5 dropped packets may indicate channel interference.
@ECHO DIVIDE 500 BY AVERAGE TIME TO GET RELATIVE THROUGHPUT (Mbps)
@ECHO 30-40 percent of your router max is good.
@ECHO *
@pause

I appreciate this, but I am a network engineer, this was the first thing I looked at. Also, my nas is a 24Tb FreeNAS box phyically connected to my router via 1Gb. My network and hardware are not the bottleneck here. If I get the same issue over a wired connection that I do over wifi, then it is something with file. I'm relatively new to encoding 4K files and just need to find that "sweet" spot.

Thank you

If you are getting any stream drops and stutters over a wired connection, yes, there is something else very wrong, and my utility can help you track lost packets there, too. Hope that's a dedicated connection, start there. Even a network switch can be a bottleneck. You should have little trouble getting a dos .bat file working, since it's the first thing we were taught in networking 101, right?

That said, Blade Runner is notorious for clogging up quality based encoders. You will find plenty of mention of it on this forum, and sustained high bitrates are are a problem for even local playback. Does your encode stutter in VLC Player, too?

Things that can help are a lower vbv-maxrate (obvious), higher RF (less complexity), and a light denoise filter. You pay a price for noise in this game, and I ended up encoding Fargo at 2 pass vbr to tame sustained bursts.

Start at square one, dont assume anything about your network until you have tested each hop, and I'm confident you'll get it.

I switched to the 30fps 4k preset and that appears to have "fixed" the issue. I am tweaking things now to get the best picture. Just sucks that most 4k encodes take at least 12 hours to run. Oh well.

During testing, though, you do not have to encode the whole thing... Just a section that covers the "troublesome" parts of the source.

Sounds like some of your devices have issues with 2160p at high bit rates, probably due to a small decoded picture buffer. Lowering the quality, frame rate, or both are the only options, short of diving into vbv-related settings and doing a ton of testing.

Looks like your sources are < 30 fps to begin with so you'll have to lower quality.

I agree, and downlimiting vbv-maxrate alone on a dedicated connection sometimes cleans it up.
A starting point for me is to keep my bitrate spikes at 1/3 of my maximum sustained throughput as estimated using pingflood utility above.

Thanks for the recommendations. I just made an encode of The Dark Knight Rises using these settings...

Started with Roku 4k 30Fps preset then changed...
Added Denoise filter NLMeans set to Medium and Film
Set it to Constant Framerate
Constant Quality to 21
Enabled Fast Decode
Single audio track (in this case DTS with DTS Passthrough)

Granted, it took forever to encode but it may have been worth it. Tested over wired nVidia Shield and it played beautifully. Will test it over wifi soon.

I suggest the stock denoise filter set to Light.
You don't need all the precision of NLMeans and your encode will go many times faster!

Going forward, post the MediaInfo or logs instead of summarizing your settings. I think I've done things all the time that never actually made it to the encoders.

You may not need all the built-in precision of NLMeans and your encode may go quite a bit faster!

Going forward, post the MediaInfo or logs instead of summarizing your settings. I think I've done things all the time that never actually made it to the encoders.

Also, are you aware that encoding x264, though larger than x265, will relieve strain on your decoder(s) and hardware, thus clearing up another impediment to delivery throughput. Might try that with or without the other enhancements. It could be important, because Blade Runner seems to be right on the edge of playability for you. I can't tell how much x264 will increase file size, maybe 20-25%.
