NS-913 portable DVD formats

Post by jelabarre59 »

I have a portable DVD player (one of those cheap OEM units sold under various names) that is supposed to be able to play MP4, AVI, etc files along with the DVD and VideoCD disks. The problem is, as usual, they speak of MP4, MPG, AVI, etc as "formats" rather than "container" files. I managed to track down an email for one of the vendors and got a codecs sheet for the device, and now I need to figure out how to translate the information on the spec sheet to settings inside Handbrake.

For the sparse information on the box, it's a Model # NS-913, sticker on the box says "Zeroxclub L98 Headrest Monitor" (you can rotate & flip the screen), there's also a "X001 LMRC5X" number on the box.

I have the codecs spec sheet posted at https://www.flickr.com/photos/88637136@N00/42087546704/ (it's a PNG file, I haven't transcribed it over to a regular text-based file yet). I have found equivalent units listed on Alibaba at https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/ ... 25536.html and https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/ ... 26291.html (it was a Christmas gift, so I don't know where this one was bought from).

I figure if I could get files this could play, it would be simpler to rip some videos to a data DVD, rather than having to fill up my daughter's Android tablet. Good for those long trips (at least I don't have to hear The Wiggles or Max & Ruby anymore :) ).

Looks like it does NOT support h.264 encoding, so you'll have to encode with "MPEG-2" as the video codec, AC3 as the audio codec, and MP4 as the container. Which means you are looking at significantly larger files than if it supported h.264.

Start with the Legacy "Universal" preset, and change the video and audio codecs as appropriate.

Looks like it supports vanilla MPEG-4 and AAC in MP4. I would probably start with Fast 480p30 and change the video codec to MPEG-4.
