Apple TV 4k HEVC Settings For 2160p Content

Post by iFoxclaw »

Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone has managed to encode 2160p content using HEVC for the Apple TV 4k. When I encode, I've been getting a split screen (side by side) on my TV (Samsung) and the colors are only Green and Red. I've worked with Apple support to determine if this is a hardware problem, however I am able to play all other 4k content through iTunes and Netflix just fine and we've since ruled our the Apple TV being the problem. When I take that same file and push it through my Roku Ultra, the video plays fine (I used the same HDMI cables and TV HDMI port to rule them out being the culprits).

I'm using the Handbrake nightly build GUI, but have read in other posts on this forum to select an apple preset and modify. Problem is, the apple presets limit the dimensions to 1080p and do not allow those to be adjusted. I want the content encoded to 2160p.

What I'm looking for, is if someone has found the settings needed to encode and have this play on an Apple TV 4k. I've tried using the Roku 2160p 30p 4k Surround, I've tried using the Normal preset and modifying for different aspects as well, but have had zero success.

The current nightly has a 4K Apple preset and updates under the hood for compatibility. If it’s not working, we’ll definitely need that log.

Thanks I will grab the activity log and post it when I'm back at my main computer later. Please be aware though I haven't been using a preset as there did not seem to be any 2160p Apple options. If I modify a current 1080p preset, I don't see to be getting any luck.

Which leads me to this question:

I just installed the latest nightly GUI build (HandBrake-20180209-155e573_x86_64-Win_GUI) but I am not seeing the 4K Apple preset on this or any previous versions? The options I have in the presets are:

General (highest i see here is 1080p with various speeds and quality)
Devices (Apple 1080p60 Surround is the highest option, Roku 2160p60 4K surround is the only option showing 2160p)
Matroska (No need here as I'm looking for MP4)
Legacy (This is where I've been doing most of my testing with various settings)

What am I missing here? Have I missed a step somehow while installing? Is this only CLI and not the GUI?

Thanks for any help you can give!

Hmm, try Presets > Reset Official Presets (or similar name). This should have happened already, but this will ensure you have the latest. Then you should see Apple 2160p60 4K HEVC Surround under Devices.

Thanks for the reset presets advice! That worked like a charm and I now have the 2160p 4k HEVC preset showing for Apple!

Tried a preview encode using the same source, but still am experiencing the same results. Split screen, green and red colors only.

The log of this encode is below:

It looks like your source video is HDR, which HandBrake does not yet support. Perhaps try a non-HDR 4K video and see if that works to be sure.

Yep, looks like you nailed it. I ran a 4k from a GoPro and it plays just fine.

Think I'll stick with my original rips and the Roku for now. Was just trying to convert a few over to MP4 for the Apple TV 4k for the downstairs TV as the kids usually watch there.

Thanks for all your help with this!
