Ipod Classic Conversion for TV

Post by xilibrius »

Please detail your question or problem in as much detail as possible:

I used to use an older program i've since lost win avi ipod converter when i switched to handbreak, I love the program to death but have ran into several different problems when it comes to converting video for my ipod classic for use with my hdtv.
Problem 1: Converted video wont always sync to the iPod Classic
Problem 2: If it does sync the video is horribly grainy and pixelated/distorted.
Problem 3: Audio and video will lose synchronise with each other getting upwards of 3-5 seconds off.
Problem 3 is far less frequent but i figured i'd post it incase a fix can be listed.
I had read somewhere that the video output needs to be at or below a certain resolution but I dont know how i set things to make it come out that way.
I have older videos on there that i had converted that display perfectly fine on my tv it's just the newer items that i've added that arent the best.
If anyone can help me figure out what and how to change in my settings to make my videos show up good on my tv i'd appreciate it a bunch.

I haven't tried to convert any videos for my ipod since I got my new computer so I don't know if my logs would show anything. I've only converted videos for my ps3. Should I still post them or try converting a video for my ipod?

You should post the logs of the videos you are having problems with.

Here are some settings from my log which may help. I've been converting my South Park DVDs and came up with some settings which produce a decent result on the TV. This works better for BluRay sources, since I don't believe those are interlaced like the DVDs are.... but it should work for both:

For video bitrate, I use the Quality selector bar there instead of VBR/ABR since the files are smaller and quality tends to be pretty good. I set that at 22.

Peak Framerate (29.97 or 30 works good)
Encoder Profile: Baseline 3.0
Video Codec: H264
Encoder Preset: (I use SLOW since it produces decent results for me)

Filters:
Detelecine - Default
Deinterlace - Decomb/Default/Default

Picture:
Video size: (always set to 720x480). The iPod Classic can make that anamorphic for any source video size.
Anamorphic: Automatic
Cropping: Automatic

Audio:
You must have 2 channels but you can use Prologic or Stereo mixdown. I believe Classics can take audio up to 320kbps (despite what the specs say). They opened this up after they made their music videos have 256kbps audio in them years ago when they introduced iTunes Plus (256kbps audio)

I usually tick the "Ipod 5G Support" checkbox but it probably isn't necessary.

One thing I found out is that Encode Tune must be set to none or the Classic will have issues with seeking. Drove me nuts until I found that out.

Hope this helps.
