I've been using Handbrake to encode DVD's for years and have been very pleased with the results. I now use an Apple TV 2 with a 52" LCD and quality has been great, with one exception: rolling smoke and fog. The blocking and blotchiness are not typically horrible but they are certainly noticeable. Are there particular settings to adjust to minimize these effects? I use the ATV 2 presets with some tweaks: RF at 19 or 18.75 and these (string) options:
ref=4:b-adapt=2:me=umh:subq=8:merange=24
File size and speed of encoding are not particular concerns for me.
I have searched the support forum and have not found a consensus on ways to improve quality in this particular case.
As ever, thanks for the help and thanks for the app.

Re: smoke and fog
Try checking "No DCT-Decimate" under Advanced. That should reduce any color banding.
