I've got a movie with english subtitles that I've ripped. It came out pretty good, the only problem I have is that the text is a bit too small and is hard to read on my ipod.

Any chance there might be some improvements to this in the future, for increasing the font size, maybe padding out some black space and putting the subtitles below the film (instead of over it)?

HandBrake/MediaFork uses "hard" subs. What this means is that the subs aren't text where you can change the font size. They're images, the same images stored on a DVD for the subtitles, and those images are overlaid and "burned" onto the picture. There is, as far as I know, no way to change the font size. We're just putting up the bitmap images stored on the disc.

I suppose someone who truly knew what they were doing could figure out a way to take those subtitle images and apply some kind of pixel-doubling routine to them, but well...the subtitle code is not easy to read or understand. I'm not sure there are any devs with the time and knowledge to mount such a project.

Also, there is little chance we're going to add a black bar at the bottom to move the subtitles to where they traditionally appear on a widescreen dvd. It will ruin aspect ratios and full-screen display and there are probably more esoteric reasons at the codec level which I can't even imagine.

The only feature we're hoping to include in the near future which might make the subs easier to read is that we want to switch to using the original subs' colors from the dvd, instead of making them transparent.
