BR Rips have Audio Dropouts over optical with ATV2?

Post by compudude »

I'm beating my head against the wall on this one.

I'm not running the absolute most recent nightly, but I'm not far back at svn3955 (I think from April?)

I have an ATV2, and I use the ATV2 preset, completely stock/unmodified. I select the BR rip folder (or sometimes just pick the big m2ts file out the stream folder by hand if I don't want to waste time on the scanning step), make sure HandBrake went to 1280 for the video (sometimes it seems to forget and leaves it at 1920, reselecting ATV2 preset seems to wake it up and put it back to 1280)), and hit Go. I have had an issue with pretty much all of my BR encodes, where the video plays fine, but the audio drops out regularly, for about a second.... plays fine for 15-20 seconds, and drops out again. Rinse, repeat, through the whole movie (or at least for the first 15 minutes or so which was as long as I've been able to stand it).

These files play back perfectly on a PC or Mac. Also fine on an iPad2.

I've known about this for a while, and ignored it, thinking that this had to be something to do with my wonky wireless network, and knowing that I plan to install a hardwired network at some point. But my wife really wanted to watch a movie I had lent the original disc to my parents the other day, so I decided to bypass the wireless issue and just ran a long wire straight from my router, giving a pure gigabit hardwired connection, and the problem still showed up! I'm sickened to think about how many discs I may have to re-rip and re-encode if I have to change the stock preset for my rips to play properly.

Could the problem be my receiver? The ATV2 connects directly to the TV via HDMI (of course), and uses TOSSLINK optical to connect to my older Sony AV receiver. This works perfectly for the nearly 500 DVDs I've encoded, it's just the BR conversions that are the issue. If going to a newer receiver with HDMI switching will solve the problem, I'm perfectly willing to give that a shot, if it's either my receiver or something funky about adding whatever audio conversion is needed for the optical output is the issue.

Thanks for any help!

Re: BR Rips have Audio Dropouts over optical with ATV2?

Post by Deleted User 11865 »

5.1 AC3 uses a higher bitrate on Blu-ray (usually 640 Kbps, where DVD only allows up to 448 Kbps). This will affect AC3 passthrough; also, on many Blu-rays, the main track is DTS-HD, so AC3 passthrough will fall back on the AC3 encoder, which also uses a bitrate of 640 Kbps by default.

If your receiver is a bit old, it's possible that it's having trouble with the higher bitrate (that's only a guess, TBH); it can be easily tested by setting the output bitrate to 448 Kbps and testing to see if it helps.

Interesting, thank you. I'll do a test rip to see.

If that solves the problem, of course, I'm back to needing to replace my receiver, I guess... or re-rip a LOT of blu-rays...

(I'm hoping it's the receiver! ;) )

Re: BR Rips have Audio Dropouts over optical with ATV2?

Post by compudude »

As a test, I re-ran the first two chapters of Black Swan (I hadn't deleted the BR rip yet, fortunately).

Per your notes, I tried to change the audio to 448 bitrate.

The ATV2 preset chose two audio tracks. One was AAC (faac) and the other was AC3 Passthru. The AAC (faac) track's bitrate was 160, so no problem there, and the AA3 Passthru track was set to Auto bitrate, the possible culprit you identified.

AC3 Passthru wouldn't let me alter the bitrate from Auto, of course, so I changed is to AC3 (ffmpeg), set the mixdown to Dolby ProLogic II (should that have been 6 channel discrete?), left the Samplerate at Auto, and set the bitrate to 448.

The good news is the video and audio played back on the ATV2 without stutters or stops, over the wireless, even. So perhaps the issue truly is my receiver?

The bad news, however, is the audio was TERRIBLE. Muffled, distorted and somewhat garbled. You could still tell what it was, but something was clearly very very wrong with it. Did I set something wrong, or was this simply a test of the receiver's capabilities? Because ripping with audio set to 448 in this manner isn't an option with audio that bad.

(Not that I want to rerip everything anyway... if getting a newer receiver, which I planned at some point anyway, will solve the problem, there doesn't seem much point to putting all that time in just to downgrade all my files if an old or faulty receiver is the only problem with the existing ones.)

Still, I'd like to know if I did something wrong with the audio, or if this was just a test and not really a viable option, just in case it's a while before I can get a new receiver installed.

Logs (snipped out a ton of stuff from the audio section as the logs were massive and pasting it in full then trying to post kept locking up my browser):

Re: BR Rips have Audio Dropouts over optical with ATV2?

Post by TedJ »

Your source doesn't have a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack does it? Handbrake 0.9.5 mistakenly identifies this as standard DTS, causing decoder issues... updating to the latest nightly build should fix this.

Code: Select all

[20:02:12] * audio track 1
[20:02:12] + decoder: English (DTS) (5.1 ch) (track 1, id 0x1100)
[20:02:12] + bitrate: 1536 kbps, samplerate: 48000 Hz
[20:02:12] + mixdown: Dolby Pro Logic II
[20:02:12] + encoder: ffac3
[20:02:12] + bitrate: 448 kbps, samplerate: 48000 Hz
Also, you've set your AC3 track for Dolby Pro Logic II downmixing, rather than 6 channel discrete.

I'm not sure how to determine if it has DTS-HD Master or not. I'll update the app regardless.

As to the last, yes, that was one question I had (in my post)... I don't usually have to mess with that setting so I wasn't sure which to choose.

I'll upgrade, and re-run those two chapters to see if there is any difference.

This isn't your issue anyway. Your build is recent enough, the DTS-HD issue only affects MKV sources, and it would be very obvious in the log (hundreds of errors).

Hmm. I need to reboot or something. Handbrake is throwing big errors and won't finish scanning any of my BR rips since I upgraded to the latest nightly. (rips that worked fine the first time with the nightly from April). Either that or this latest version has serious issues. If rebooting doesn't work I may have to downgrade.

(Looks like the issue was svn3993, but svn3997 seems to be scanning fine.) I'll re-test shortly...

Confirmed. Encoded with the audio bitrate at 448 instead of 640, the receiver does fine.

Odd that it doesn't have a problem with actual Blu-ray discs, but I'll take this as an excuse to upgrade the receiver anyway. ;)

All the BD sources you've provided logs for don't have AC3 audio, so your BD player wasn't sending that (what it was actually sending depends on what your receiver supports, how your BD player is configured and how it's connected to the receiver).

Good point. Still, considering the immediate problem does indeed seem to be solved by lowering the audio bitrate from 640 to 448, as you recommended, it seems pretty clear that upgrading the receiver should allow my current files to work normally without having to re-rip and re-encode everything. Thanks!

Just to close out this issue, replacing my old Sony receiver with a lovely new Denon 2112 receiver (which now connects via HDMI) has solved the problem completely. My BR-sourced files look (and sound) fantastic coming from my ATV2!

I haven't tried the new receiver connecting to the ATV2 via optical, just to see if the optical connection played any role, but there doesn't seem to be any point to bothering.
