Full DVD Quality Rips

Post by sakers »

It seems after searching for this answer that this question may be unpopular, however, I thought I'd give it a shot. I have the new Apple TV (ATV2) and want to stream rips in as close to DVD quality as possible regardless of the file size. I am currently using the Lifehacker preset "iPad and iPhone (iFrame)" that uses an average bitrate of 4096. The only thing I've added is ":vbv-maxrate=5500:vbv-bufsize=5500" at the end of the advanced option screen and "use picture size" set to "source maximum". The result is an outstanding looking rip with a fill size in the 3 to 4 GB range. So my question is this, is there a way to achieve truly full DVD quality that is playable on the Apple TV, or is this the best I can hope for?

I suggest starting with the High Profile preset and adding the following string to the x264 advanced options tab:-

Code: Select all

ref=5:b-adapt=2:direct=auto:me=umh:subq=8:rc-lookahead=50
Don't use ABR encoding, instead use CRF with RF ranges of 20-18 for SD (DVD) sources and 24-22 for HD sources.

Moving to Devices.

Truly lossless, no. Perceptively lossless, quite easily.

Thanks for the quick reply TedJ. However, I tried your suggestion for RF=18, 16, 14, and even 12. I even used the settings I was previously using except with those same RF settings. In each case I found my original settings with ABR=4096 looked the best (at least to me... and I am extremely picky). I guess I will stick with that for now. Thanks again.

In the end, your opinion is all that should matter to you.

That said, you're likely wasting a lot of bits.

You're not picky, you're delusional (and I mean that in the nicest possible way). Please post an encoding log from one of your 4Mbps encodes so I can see what the QPs came out as.

The LifeHacker recommendations are quite lousy (a waste of space on most encodes, but sometimes not enough for dirty grainy movies) and I second what TedJ said. I basically said the same in my A4 encoding thread.

I probably am delusional, but as long as I'm happy living in my own delusion all is good. :-) I basically watch the same clip with several encodes looking for very specific artifacts. In my modified Lifehacker setting there were considerably fewer artifacts. Anyway, here is the encoding log for the 4 minute clip I used for testing. I'm anxious to hear your thoughts regarding its content.

You're using a preset with x264 settings (ref=2:bframes=2:subq=6:mixed-refs=0:weightb=0:8x8dct=0:trellis=0) designed for the various limitations and retardedness of the old Apple TV. Regardless of rate control method, you don't want to use those; at the very least just clear out the x264 advanced string.

Did you try TedJ's x264 settings when you switched rate control methods?

I did try TedJ's settings. I started with High Profile and replaced the Advanced Option String with the code form his reply. And don't get me wrong, the results were good. They just weren't as good as my baseline. In particular I would look in shadowy areas or the pattern on a corduroy jacket to see if there was blurriness or graininess especially during movement. Using TedJ's settings I got really close in quality at RF=14, but the file size was also close to my baseline file size at that point. I'm going to try again using your suggestions from the A4 encoding thread you linked to earlier. Maybe that will yield closer results with better file sizes.

My settings aren't going to produce any different results than TedJ's.

In my modified Lifehacker setting there were considerably fewer artifacts. Anyway, here is the encoding log for the 4 minute clip I used for testing. I'm anxious to hear your thoughts regarding its content.

For this specific source, 4096 Kbps gives you roughly the quality of RF 13.5. So RF12 is going to look better overall - you're just seeing what you want to see.

Just try again using the same setting as above, using RF 12 instead of 2-pass, and post the log.

Actually that's the Normal preset's x264opts. They're incompatible with the ATV 1 ;-)

You caught me... sort of. I didn't actually fool with looking closely at the RF=12 because the file size was bigger than my baseline. So I was seeing a slight improvement with 4Mbps (RF=13.5 equivalent) over the RF=14. Since it was slight and the file sizes were close I had decided to stick with the 4Mbps. I will definitely run again with the same setting using RF=12 instead of 2-pass and post the log

mduell = I reran with iPad as the starting point and they were slightly better than starting with High Profile and using TedJ's advanced option string.

So I reran with my baseline settings (modified Lifehacker) but used RF=12 instead of 2-pass 4Mbps. This new approach looked better, but the file size was larger. The 3.5 minute scene was 134MB versus the previous 127MB. Here is the encoding log:

You caught me... sort of. I didn't actually fool with looking closely at the RF=12 because the file size was bigger than my baseline. So I was seeing a slight improvement with 4Mbps (RF=13.5 equivalent) over the RF=14. Since it was slight and the file sizes were close I had decided to stick with the 4Mbps. I will definitely run again with the same setting using RF=12 instead of 2-pass and post the log
Note that at these kinds of QPs, the only way to see the difference (on a properly calibrated monitor) is to compare both encodes side by side (looking at static frames) - unless you have a supersized display with a projector and/or are sitting very close to it, you're unlikely to notice much difference when actually watching the video.

Agreed. I have been sitting extremely close to my TV and my monitor. :-)

BTW, RF=13 looks better to me than my baseline with slightly smaller file sizes but much faster encodes. I may use that going forward, or even bump it up to RF=14. And yes, I am splitting hairs (or pixels) that most wouldn't at this point, so I definitely appreciate everyone's willingness to help.

Even if you're set using crazy low RFs, 4096 Kbps may still be excessive for some sources:

Excellent point. I didn't think of that. Basically I've been optimizing my settings for chapter 11 of School of Rock, which is likely not the best approach for all chapters of all movies.

Regarding crazy low RFs, I have to say I'm not sure why what I'm after seems to be so unpopular. I'd keep all my movies in ISO form if I could. What I really want is true DVD quality not near or perceptively near or virtually DVD quality. When I see a wall in the background of a scene that looks as though its moving because of pixelation it distracts me from the main action. So low RFs seems to be the way to go at least for me. And thanks again for your help.

Please stop using those [censored] x264 settings. They're quite limited and totally unnecessary for tv2.

So why not buy a better media player and do that?
Keeping full DVD quality isn't unpopular; I do it myself. I keep the [censored] DVD.

Agreed. I have switched to using the iPad preset as you referenced in your "A4 encoding" thread (thanks for pointing me to it!). I'll just be using a lower RF value than you suggest.

I of course keep the DVD and an ISO copy. My point was I'm trying to see if I can create a tv2 playable version that matches that quality. I also happen to think the tv2 IS the better media player (lack of ISO or MKV support aside) or I wouldn't have purchased it. Using it makes me happy, which may be why my replies don't need to be censored.
