jittery video streaming to xbox 360

Post by larysius »

Hi all,

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can offer. I am using 094 version of handbrake and have decided to re-encode my dvds from the ipod-only format i used to use to a more versatile format that will not only play on the ipod, but look good on television as well. I am running an intel iMac 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 3GB of memory. I have the 64bit versions of Hanbrake and VLC, but are up to date, and presently have a wired network set up on AT&T DSL 6mb internet. Thus far I have tried multiple movies (all are DVDs) with the default settings of the "universal" presets, modified "universal" preset with RF19 for a bit more quality with the same result.

I also tried encoding from a ripped DVD and the DVD directly with no change, and tried with the Normal preset as well. My goal is to have an ipod (160gb classic 5.5gen) compatible file that can stream over xbox 360 to my 40" Samsung 1080p widescreen tv. The resulting file plays well on the mac itself, but exhibits a jittering effect while it plays on the 360. Seems like an fps issue to me, but I tried an encode with a lower fps and it did nothing to remedy it. My guess is it's a 360 issue.

Alternatively, I tried the High Profile settings and the resulting file jittered much less but then for some reason though the picture displayed fine on the mac, it was stretched a little bit vertically on the tv and I'm not sure which setting of the HP preset would cause this since there are many more turned on than with the Universal preset. If I can remedy the stretched picture thing, I would be willing to just do a separate file for tv streaming use and then a smaller file for the ipod. I like the High Profile preset picture quality better anyway. Here is the log for one of the encodes. Settings are the same for all the DVDs I encoded. Also, for note, the Ipod preset though vastly inferior in picture quality for a television, did not exhibit the jittering effect. Any ideas what could cause it and what I can do to fix it? Thank you in advance for your help.

I don't know why, but the xbox has issues playing VFR (variable frame rate) videos. Its not handbrake but the xbox itself. Even VFR videos made on my ipod touch has issues. If you set handbrake to use a constant framerate, the issue goes away. For most movies this is fine, but for some movies, using VFR helps correct 2:2 pull down issues on some DVDs.

Where, in 0.9.4 would I find this option?

I'm going to put my money on the combobox marked "Framerate (FPS)".

Your sarcasm is neither appreciated nor warranted, but thanks none-the-less.
