Is there a hardware encoder that works with handbrake that I can purchase for Windows 7 to make the encoding process quicker?
Nope.

Hey Folks,

I followed Mduell's instructions to the letter from the first post in this thread on the Star TreK DVD. I used RF=19 and everything else was as Mduell's proscribed. This results in a ~1.8 GB file that plays fine on the iPad and fine in iTunes (Windows 7 PC). But on the Apple TV2 is has huge macroblocking problems (I think that is the term) and also the audio gets way out of sync with the video over time. I also tried Windows Media Player which had similar macroblocking issues.

Since it looks great in iTunes and on the iPad I expect the encoding is fine and either Apple needs a firmware update to the TV 2 to fix some problems or somehow the TV 2 can't support the same video as an iPad - which seems unlikely.

I'm not an expert on this stuff but I just thought I would mention this and see if anyone else following Mduell's instructions had similar problems.

kjoe, it would be helpful if you could post an activity log so that we can see exactly what settings and type of source material causes this.

Sorry about that - I'll post it inline here. I grabbed the nightly build earlier today as the log shows... Thanks for any help!

Never mind that log. I'm encoding now and will send the completed log after that. I'm a noob here in case you couldn't tell :-)

Okay, here is the full activity log for my encoding of the Star Trek DVD. Again, I followed Mdeull's instructions I think. The resulting file looks great in iTunes and on the iPad but has terrible video artifacts on both the TV 2 and in Windows Media Player. Thanks again for any pointers!

Sounds like it might be a weightp issue. Except the AppleTV 2 (the black one) should support weightp, like all other A4-based devices. The old AppleTV is the one that has trouble with weightp (and b-pyramid).

Anyway, try adding weightp=0 to your x264 advanced options string.

I tried setting weightp to 0 and also disabling b-pyramid but the Apple TV2 still has video artifacts. Setting weightp=0 did remove the artifacts from windows media player though. I'm starting to think that Apple may have some bugs in the intial firmware release for the TV2.

If anyone else is using Handbrake successfully to perform clean encodes of DVD's for the Apple TV2 please pass along the settings...

I'm not terribly good at deciphering the settings in the log file, but I can tell you that I have successfully ripped both DVDs and Blurays (on current SVN and previous rips over the past year) and everything plays fine on both my ATV2 and iPad. In fact I'm doing some new HD encodes right now based off the High Profile setting and am quite amazed; the ATV2 and iPad handle them without an issue.

Download the latest nightly build and do a rip using the stock iPad settings for a compatibility test.

Guys, just a sanity check needed on 2 details discussed in this thread.

1. I'm using High profile as a baseline, making changes as noted...including setting the frame rate to 29.97 and choosing Peak framerate...the question is, is this definitely right even for film-based material that is typically shot in 24fps? I'm talking 98% of the hollywood movie stuff...it just seemed a little odd that I would choose 29.97 when the source is a Bluray (or DVD for that matter) which are 24fps unless they are video concerts and such.

2. The Audio choices...I'm mostly good here but with the new DTS-to-AC3 conversion, I notice the default for a source that has DTS track is to choose AAC for the Codec and Dolby ProLogic II for the mixdown, then the next line down automatically chooses AC3 and 6-channel discrete. Is that actually correct? For those of us with 5.1 setups for ATV2?

Just need to know all is well in the world here before embarking on mega-ripping for the next several days. Thanks to the Dev's, things are really looking nice in the latest builds!

Yes, this is fine. Selecting a framerate along with the peak framerate results in a variable framerate (i.e. same as source) but it caps the maximum framerate to 29.97 fps. This probably isn't necessary for most Blu-ray/DVD rips but is a good idea for HDTV captures that may exceed 29.97 fps, resulting in an encode that won't play on the ATV2.

This is the standard layout for presets targeting the ATV. You have a Dolby Surround stereo track for those without a 5.1 setup or for playback on portable devices (iPad/iPhone 4), and a 5.1 AC3 track for those with a compatible receiver.

Excellent, thanks Ted. I notice the video quality is amazing, but did notice on my first encode here that the audio is a bit off. This 6-channel discrete may not be the right choice me thinks. Or else the brand new DTS conversion to AC3 is a bit off. The symptom I've noticed is that although I get a nice Dolby 5.1 surround mix, it's a bit off. The overall volume is quite a bit lower, so I have to jack it up just to hear it well, and even then, there is not enough dialogue sound, and too much sound effects. In others words, even at highly jacked volume levels, I can barely hear the narrator in a documentary that I've recorded and listened to many times before. I think I may go back to converting DTS-to-AC3 with the mkvdts2ac3 scripts that I've had for a while, at least temporarily for now.

But otherwise, these transcodes are some of the best I've ever seen.

Possible daft question, but if I'm encoding DVD for atv2, does it really matter if I choose the Apple TV or iPad preset from the latest nightly?

Fear not! I'm a way bigger n00b than you at this.

Got my AppleTV2 a few weeks ago, found handbrake, and just yesterday bought a larger external HD.

Well, not knowing anything about any of the settings and just using some basic knowledge, I got a really good rip/encode done. It was off an SD DVD, streaming from a last gen 24" iMac, software and iTunes up to date, to my AppleTV 2 on a 46" Sony and it was fabulous. So IT CAN be done.

Don't know what I did, trying to learn all this stuff now, but it is possible. Looked good on my iPhone as well.

Only problem is I think it came out to be a rather large file.

I'll keep up on this thread when/if I get it all figured out with this new knowledge I am trying to pick up on these forums.

I have a P4 3.0ghz system with 4gb of ram, but to convert a DVD using the high profile is taking about 5 hours.
I have over 100 dvds that I would like to convert for the new apple tv, but at 5 hours each it doesnt make sense.

I figure if I can purchase some hardware encoder, the process should be hopefully alot quicker.
Any sugguestions would be appreciated.

I have been encoding Blu-Ray with a modified version of dynaflash's AppleTV Hi Profile @ 1280 with CRF 21.5 for about 6 months. I had to set bframes to 0 and disable 8x8 transform to get the videos to play smoothly on my gen 1 AppleTV. My options are

Code: Select all

ref=4:me=umh:bframes=0:8x8dct=0:trellis=0:subq=9:weightb=0:no-fast-pskip=1:analyse=all:mixed-refs=1:weightp=0:vbv-maxrate=5500:vbv-bufsize=5500
I compared a test clip of HP5 chapter 1 using the settings above to the iPad profiles list my mduell (iPad, iPad + x264cli's slow and iPad + slower). The file sizes i get are relatively the same (withing 5%) and the encoding time of the newer profiles is 5-10% faster. However, I am having a very hard time discerning a difference in quality. My question is, should I be able to see a difference in quality?

I know this is very subjective, but I'm wondering if the newer profiles should be obviously of a higher visual quality? When I did CRF testing the differences were very obvious to me, but here they just aren't, and maybe I really don't have an eye for it. Or are the differences are in the compression techniques and shouldn't provide a significantly noticeable visual difference, but more a file size and encoding speed difference?

If I really should see a quality difference can someone tell me what details I should be looking at? I posted a question ( http://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=18799 ) asking about test clips the the details that I have been looking for, but If I should be seeing a significant visual difference what I am currently doing is obviously wrong.

Thanks!

Since you haven't provided encoding logs  we're left guessing at what you did or mean.

What resolution did you use with the iPad preset? The default 1024 or upgraded to 1280 for tv2?

You say "the newer profiles is 5-10% faster" referring to what? The difference between iPad and iPad+slower is a lot more than 10%.

Sorry, I wasn't asking to debug my issues with the AppleTV Hi Profile. I was just giving the settings I used for a comparison.

I upped the iPad profile preset to 1280 and changed the framerate to 'same as source' for the the ATV2 encode. I then also tried the slow and slower options you provided.

The iPad profile included in the nightly builds encode 5-10% faster than the older modified AppleTV Hi Profile I was using, at least for me.

In general I'm really just wondering how the visual quality of the Handbrake AppleTV Hi preset with Dynaflash's latest options should compare to the iPad preset, given identical resolutions, frame rates and CRFs for the same Handbrake build. For the average user should this be a significantly noticeable increase in quality, a slight increase in quality or no increase in visual quality but instead produce smaller output file sizes with shorter encoding times?

Does that make sense?

Unnecessary. 29.97 fps Peak Framerate is same as source unless the source exceeds 29.97 fps.

About the same, as you've found. His preset has a number of limitations, but also some advanced analysis, compared to the iPad preset. Enjoy the 5-10% speed bump.

Cool, thanks. I should have asked before all the testing :)

To match Dynaflash's analytics I upped the ref frames and BFrames to 3, added mixed-refs and upped subme to 7. I still didn't see a significant enough quality improvement to move to the new iPad-based profile (I actually couldn't tell any difference). The speed increase is nice, but not worth giving up compatibility with the original AppleTV if thats the only difference - at least for me.

My only remaining questions are about my modification of Dynaflash's profile. I remove BFrames and 8x8 Transform because I have been unable to get smooth video on my original ATV with them enabled. Would removing these from Dynaflash's settings decrease quality, or just increase encoding time and file size? My tests seem to indicate the latter, and BFrames appears to be primarily a compression function that affects bitrate / file size, and doesn't necessarily increase quality. Is that a correct statement? Or does switching to BFrames with advanced quality settings somehow improve quality by replacing the pFrames? 8x8dct looks like it would have some affect on quality, and not just on file size?

I'm wondering if I need to spend the time to try and figure out why my AppleTV chokes on bFrames and 8x8dct or not. I'm really only concerned if I could get a quality increase - the slight increases in encoding times and file sizes don't bother me that much. From the encodes I've done so far it seems that the bitrate generated by a CRF of 21 with vbv-maxrate=5500:vbv-bufsize=5500 for a 1280* resolution is enough to handle the job, but I'm not sure if I just got lucky and really should be using bFrames and 8x8 to ensure I stay in the safe bitrate range for most 1280 encodes. The fact that Dynaflash included them leads me to believe I probably should, but I'm wondering if that was for the average encodes or just to catch the fringe ones?

Thank you very much for your help!

Both will tend to increase filesize at constant rate factor (or decrease quality at constant bitrate).

Dynaflash was looking to push the limits of the device; I'm not sure why yours would be unable to handle the same. The only downside to no bframes or 8x8 is you may hit the 5.5Mbps limit and quality will suffer in those scenes (Planet Earth birds, etc).

Re: Encoding for A4 devices (iPad, iPhone 4, tv 2)

Post by ZappZero »

Hello,

just two questions please, I have a VIDEO_TS-Folder, the nighly build from today, Format MP4 file, Large file size, Preset Apple -iPad H.264 with 29.97... constand quality RF 20.

If I now click on Picture Settings, HandBrake shows me: Width: 720, do not keep aspect ratio height 480, Anamorphic loose, modulus 16 and cropping automatic.

1. Where the heck can I change the resolution to 1280 as described above? In Picture Settings I can dial down, but not up. Or isn't it necessary because of the DVD-Format?

2. This are the optimum settings for the iPad - use only on iPad?

1. You can't upscale (because it's stupid).

2. They're good for any A4 device; the only iPad specific part is a default max resolution of 1024, which you could change to 1280 if you had high res content.
