Best Quality Setting for Apple TV

Post by rubster »

I'm new to this forum and HandBrake, so let me start by saying "hi." :D

I am looking to encode my DVD library (all standard def movies) housed on my NAS (QNAP if anyone's interested) as MP4 in order to load all of my movies into iTunes for streaming thru AppleTV, viewing on my iPad, iPhone, etc...The DVD's on my NAS were saved as an exact copy of the DVD itself (so video_ts folder, with .vob, etc...) which iTunes can't natively recognize. As a test case, I converted a movie (30 days of night) using the AppleTV preset and while is looked OK on my iPad, clearly has quality degregation from the encoding process (see activity log attached). BTW, my technical knowledge is tapped at this point...so...I need some guidance.

Ultimately, I simply want to get all of my movies into a format readable via iTunes (I used MetaX for Windows to import the cover art and movie info for 30 days of night and it worked beautifully...want to duplicate that 600 times ). I also want to retain a much of the quality as I can when putting the .vobs into the mp4 container. I DON'T care about file size...just quality.

So...here's where I need a lot of help. I read on these forums that I should move the constant quality setting to 62.75%, which provides the best quality (I guess without blowing up the file size). Anything else I should do to maintain quality? For instance, is it as simple as just using the "High Profile" preset? Is that better? Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

Which generation of Apple TV and iPhone are we talking about here? The earlier revisions aren't as capable as the current models.

Moving to Devices.

High Profile is not AppleTV-compatible, unless you have the 2010 model.

Thanks TedJ. I am planning on using the recently announced AppleTV (iTV)...I don't have the expiring generation of AppleTV...and iPhone 4 with iOS 4...Really just want to make sure I do this encoding process once and for all...

Appreciate it.

As Rodeo pointed out above, the High Profile preset should work for the new Apple TV - we won't know for sure until we see one but based on it's similarity to the hardware in the iPhone 4 and iPad it's very likely.

So...are you suggesting then that using the high profile preset would yield the best quality? Do I need to play with the constant quality setting? I get you are likely to say we need to wait and see, but assuming it should work on the new box...is that my best option?

Thanks again.

My hope is that the new CPU and updated codebase will allow high profile encodes to stream smoothly to the new AppleTV. I've already encoded a couple test clips to try out as soon as it arrives!

Thanks all...greatly appreciate your responses. However, I'm not sure I got a response to my real question...what settings should I use to generate the highest quality MP4 file? And, for simplicity, let's just assume that high profile WILL work with the new AppleTV.

Thanks again...sorry if I seem a bit slow...just don't want to have to go back and do this process more than once.

High Profile preset, change the quality setting to perhaps RF 19.

Drop the AC3 track if you won't have 5.1 sound with the Apple TV; it's just deadweight on the iPhone.

It might be worth waiting a week or so for people to get their hands on the new appletv and play around with the settings.

As was said above. Then wait. No one here has a crystal ball. Don't expect a definitive response until someone has one to test.

I'm betting the high profile preset will stream perfectly to the new AppleTV, so I've gone ahead and encoded some material to test with once my new AppleTV has arrived. Of course, unless Apple decides to ship preorders out early this week, I'll likely have to wait until next weekend to try them out as I'll be out of town at training all next week.

Thanks all. I encoded a few using the AppleTV preset moving the RF to 19 and them seem pretty good. I compared them (viewing on my desktop) to a couple encoded using the High Profile preset (at RF 19) and frankly couldn't see a visible difference...now that may not be the case on a 50" via AppleTV, so I will wait and see what you folks find.

Thanks a million! Appreciate all of the feedback.

The High Profile preset encodes should be a bit smaller for the same quality.

Thanks Rodeo...didn't really get much out of those posts (which I had already read) other than ATV2 is a turd...:-).

Basically, did anyone confirm if the high profile preset at 19 is the best as was suggested? Can someone just post settings? I know...I'm quite new at this...

Download the nightly, use the iPad preset. Or the High Profile preset with the dimension/framerate limitations from the iPad preset.
RF19 is a bit low for 720p, I doubt you'll see much difference below 21.

Thanks mduell.

So...I have no experience with the nightly downloads...I assume they are basically beta versions that are updated more frequently than the full releases. Am I going to be limited using the iPad preset? I think another post suggested the settings for iPad, iPhone, AppleTV, are all basically the same (ignoring the AC3 discussion)...

If I use the High Profile with the dimension/framrate limitations from the iPad presets as you describe, does that any difference? Do I need the nightly to do that or can someone post the dimension/framerate settings here?

The nightly is pretty slick, it's just like downloading any release. It has all the presets and is fully functional.

The HP preset also has some filters turned on by default that the iPad preset does not. The dimension and framerate limits for the new tv (and all A4 devices) are 1280x720 and 30 fps (you want to use peak, not constant). The iPad preset is actually 1024 wide (any more is a waste on the low res display), so I guess you'll want to modify that too for best quality on tv.

Thanks mduell!

Awesome info...

One last question...you mention that the iPad is 1024 wide and that any wider is a waste on low res display...does that hold true via AppleTV on a 50"? The movies will be SD, so if I leave the dimensions at 1280x720, won't I be better off in the future?

HB won't upscale your SD content (at least not via the GUI, and for good reason) so you can just use the straight iPad preset. 1280x720 would of course look better if you had a higher resolution source.

mduell...I noticed in another AppleTV 2 thread, you suggested that the poster use the High Profile preset, but above seemed to encourage the iPad preset. Given the ATV2 has been out for while now, any clarity on the best quality settings???

There'y almost identical. High Profile is a bit slower, and offers slightly improved compression efficiency (and includes an AC3 passthrough track, but you can easily add one to the iPad preset and save a custom preset).
