Persuaded the GUI maintainers to expose peak framerate control, so there's a built-in now, will show up in the next nightly.

CLI equiv is:
-e x264 -q 20.0 -r 29.97 --pfr -a 1 -E faac -B 160 -6 dpl2 -D 0.0 -f mp4 -4 -X 1024 --loose-anamorphic -m

(Using loose ana because strict is a no go since it does not scale and custom doesn't have its parameters all exposed to the preset system yet).

tested video size : 720x400, 30fps/ 720x576, 23,98fps
last tested video: avatar, encoded from a 23Gb mkv DTSHD 1080p--> 720x400, file size 2,2Gb, quality looks like a 720p divx movie on my LCD TV.
the goal here was to test how much the iphone 3gs can handle, by making the settings higher step by step, making sure itunes still allow the videos to sync.
and make my videos looks great on my PC, and TV, and compatible with my iphone (and my ipad in a near future), I'm sure the ipad can handle more than that, but I think it's too much considering file size and disk space on the ipad.
For those who want to test higher values for the ipad for testing purpose, you can start from here, for the others who want best quality so far, you can stick to my values.
P.S: encoding time is pretty long ( for avatar, 8 to 9 hours of encoding with my AMD II X4 630 processor )

I took these setting and have managed to go considerably further. In my case I have an uncompressed 10bit Quicktime file (from a 2K scan of a 35mm neg) of about 80 seconds and 2GB in size. I need the best possible quality on my iPad and I don't care how long Handbrake takes to encode. With the following settings the encoding takes about 1.5 hours on a CoreDuo2 MacBook Pro.

Has anyone managed to gone beyond this?

I am yet to play with more than 7 reference frames.

Please don't pretend you can tell the difference between RF10 (80%) and higher. Moron.

Excessive, slowing down your encode.
cfm wrote:Motion estimation range:64
Very excessive, just slowing down your encode. Try 24 at most.
cfm wrote:No Fast P Skip On

Not terribly useful, but not the worst idea in your settings.

Insanely excessive. No point beyond RF 15.

Correct, that's the level 3.1 limit for 16:9 content at 1024 pixels wide.

I am not an encoding guru (according to rodeo that makes me a moron!), can someone explain why an rf of 10-15 is pointless?

I really don't care about encoding time, only the quality of the end result.

Because RF is a logarithmic scale and you pass the point of diminishing returns around RF 15 - after that your encode size increases rapidly with no corresponding increase in perceived quality.

I've run into a problem encoding a PAL DVD. The output from Handbrake works fine on my computer with no issues, however when playing the same file on my iPad, the audio is out of sync. I live in the States (an NTSC area, if that makes a difference). I've tried a couple of different settings, but the end result is the same: the encoded file plays fine on my computer, but not on the iPad. Anyone else have a similar problem? The DVD was copied to HD with DVD Decrypter.

Hi.

I´ve been using HB for several years. In fact I have hanbraked more than 100 movies in an external hard drive.
They are either .mp4 or .mov format.
Question is: I´m about to get an iPad and after testing on a borrowed iPad none of my movies can be seen on iPad.
What is the procedure focused on those movies I already have in my hard drive?
Thanks in advance

Hello

I've been trying to encode some of my videos for my ipad using the suggestions found on the first post and it all worked perfectly with 40 minutes 720p mkvs.
Then I tried to convert two 720p mp4 movies and I had the same problem with both.
The video was perfect, exactly what I expected, but the audio was about three times slower than it should have been (and of course was tremendously out of sync and QT said those videos were about 6 hours long instead of approximately 2).

Would somebody please help me out???

Thank you very much and sorry if my English is bad, I'm Italian. :D

Normally I would admonish you for not providing an activity log since most problems can't be solved without them (hint, next time, provide a log). But since this is one of the few problems that is easily recognizable, I'll throw you a bone. The 0.9.4 release could not handle multi-channel aac audio input. So upgrade to the nightly. Announcements for the nightlies are at the top of every forum.

Thank you very much John, I will now try with the nightly.

I am really sorry for the silly question, I had even searched on the forum but I didn't find anything.
I hope it works. Thank you again. :)

Hello again,
I followed the advice, used the nightly and everything went smooth with 3/4 movies.
Then yesterday I started having troubles with a .mp4 movie that gave me a file of approximately 6gb instead of around 2gb that is the average dimension of the files I usually get with these settings; the Mac couldn't even recognized it as a movie, but I forgot to save the log.

Today I had another trouble, I tried with the nightly I had been using and I also tried with a most recent one and I had the same problem: the video goes well, instead the audio starts a few seconds out of sync and arrives at the end of the movies being about 5 minutes late.
Here is the log of the last try I did, I hope I attached it the right way.

Any suggestions? Thank you very much. :)

I ripped a Blu Ray dvd today for the first time (Yes i purchased it) with the hopes of putting it on my iPad using MakeMKV (Worked perfect).... I have read this forum and used HandBrake for a couple of years... I just have a quick question. I have a main file size of around 20G from my Blu Ray. I used the High Profile setting on HandBrake and only changed the size of the capture output to 1024 so it would fit on the iPad... I kept everything else default. Is it normal for this file to take 6 hours to encode? if it is, fine... I just wanted to know if I did something wrong. I have a 17" MBP with 4 Gig of Ram etc... so I am not using a old slow computer. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, 6 hours for an High Profile HD encode is typical on a slow laptop like that.

You might want to download a nightly build (see the announcement at the top of every subforum) and use the iPad preset. It should be a tad faster than the High Profile preset and automatically adjust the picture dimensions to fit within 1024x576.

So the iPad therefore accepts High Profile level 3.1 video? I'm converting a 720p blu-ray rip (which I own) of Avatar using the iPad preset and it's using High Profile level 3.1.

Hello,

What quality would you recommend? I'm a little bit addicted to the best quality (maybe for further using, or profession - who knows :-).
Normaly I would choose "Constand quality: 100.00% RF0"

What would be the optimum choice for DVD-sources?

Thanks

Only if you wanted a bloated, non-working encode. ;)

As discussed in the Support FAQ, you should never use 100% RF0 - for SD sources anything above 65% (RF18) is going to cause massive increases in file size without a corresponding increase in perceived quality.

As Rodeo mentioned above, you may want to look at a nightly build, which includes a dedicated iPad preset.

I just downloaded the nightly build and RF for the iPad preset is 20. So are you suggesting that RF be lowered from the preset setting ?

Not as such, that's a decision that is entirely up to you and your eyes. I was merely stating that there's little point reducing RF below 18 for most SD sources.

Thank you very much for your fast tips! :D

Worked for the moment (I run out of time, so your tips had been really appreciated).
Now I have something to read, before I will ask my next questions...

Do you have some good tips for some RTFMs - not to technically, just enough to under-
stand and make the right decisions? God, I hate this questions by myself...

Here are the settings I've been using with great results.
ref : (18000/((width/16)(height/16))) <- Formula used to calculate maximum reference frames
mixed ref: on
bframes :16
adaptive bframe :Optimal
d prediction: Automatic
weighted and pyramidal frames : on
motion estimation method : uneven multi-hexagon
subq: 10
Motion estimation range: 16
analysis : all
8x8 dct: on
cabac: on
trellis: 2
deblocking:default
rf: 25 (for blu-ray source)
picture anamorphic: loose
psy-rd: 2.0,0.20
Does anyone have any more suggestions? I don't really care how long it takes to encode. I've been getting good quality videos mostly under 1GB using these settings.
