What would be the settings to make movies full screen on the iPad?

I have most of my movies converted to standard. Widescreen looks great, but when enlarged look kinda crappy. Was wondering if I encode them for full screen what it would look
like. I know I'll loose screen, but just wanted to see.

Are they DVD sources or HD?

DVDs aren't going to look any better by cropping off the sides to make them widescreen. For 16:9 widescreen HD sources crop 240 pixels off both sides and set the width to 1024.
