AppleTV 720p Preset could now make sense ...

Post by jbjoret »

I know there has been a lot of discussions in the past on this subject, I was part of if and supported the point of view of the Handbrake Team especially because sources like 1080/50i or 1080/25p were real issues, converting those video sources to 24000/1001 was not a viable option. But there is something new that seem to have come up (I guess with 3.0.2.) the AppleTV seems to be able to synch and play 720p with 25 fps without any issue. I know this because I did convert my second 720p/25fps movie for the ATV yesterday, and it works very well. Does anybody see any other reason why there should not be a HD Profile ?

....because there's a lot of content out there faster than 25fps or which varies framerate?

Ok, there is 50i, 60i, 30p that I know of, honestly I have not seen anything else out there, but they all convert fine to 24000/1001 or 25p. The only problem I had until today was 50i or 25p to 24000/1001. The only thing that don't work for me is 60i from VC1 codec, but then Handbrake (ffmpeg) just strikes. The ATV supporting 25fps is very new to me. I have my own profile that has been working very well with over 400 HD sources until now, so I don't really need a profile, but I thought it might be interesting to look at it again.

WTF are you talking about? Dropping frames looks horrible.

No, 30fps and 60fps and hybrid sources do *not* "convert fine" to 24fps or 25fps.
