1080 to iPad?

Post by Julien321 »

I rip all my BD's to my unRAID server using Clown and AnyDVD HD. I just rip the main feature (sans DRM) to an ISO. I want to watch some content on my iPad (and would like to do my iPhone too). I see there is no preset for the iPad yet. Is there going to be one and what resolution/setting? The iPad will do up to 720p but it seems that going with 1024x574 (1024x434 for 2.35) would be a better choice. This would avoid down scaling and be a smaller file size. Is there an consensus on what the best settings are and will there be presets?

There will be a preset. Likely with 1024 width. There are already several threads about it.

Thanks, so it would probably be best and wait until after the release and see what works then. Also I see on the iPhone preset the audio is 120kbps but the spec is 160kbps and the HandBrake choices go up to 320kbps. Can it be changed to 160kbps and if you go higher it won't play? Is (will) the same be true of the iPad. Was 120kbps chosen as a compromise and is there any video settings this is also true on like "constant Quality 60:78%"?

Everything is a compromise.

Sure you can go to 160k. Can you really hear a difference between 128k and 160k with the iPhone in typical listening environments? I doubt it.

61% (RF 20) is about as high as you want to go on video quality, especially with HD source material.

Trust me when I say there will be no officially endorsed iPad preset until a dev has one in hand and can wring it out. Too many variables and unknowns. Apple is notoriously underrated on their published specs. Patience is a virtue in this case.

True so I may transcode a few to 1024x574/160Kbps audio just to be ready and if they don't work just delete them. For me I see no need for 720p since there would be no PQ benefit (may be a downscaling penalty).

Most of the Encodes Blu Ray or DVD that I have done for my Apple TV Should work on my Ipad, here's the only one's I'm unsure about and that's 4:3 material, there's not much 4:3 stuff we have to worry about but I want to Encode my Star Trek TOS Blu Rays to be able to play them on the Ipad. Now the Ipod supports up to 720p. With 4:3 material 1280 Wide is going to put the Hieght at 960p no good. Going to 1024 actually matches the Ipad's screen Rez but put's the Height at 768, once again too high. Going to 960 seems to be the best I can accomplish as it puts the Height at 720p. Now I want to also use these files on my Apple TV and that should be no issue if I stay with 960x720p. Even if Ipad is forgiving and I can use native Rez 1024x768 not sure those files would play on my ATV. Guess we'll have to play with it, but I'll stay 960x720p on the few eps I encode to get ready fo rthe Ipad's release...

You could try custom anamorphic at 1280 x 720 for slightly better quality (a pixel aspect ratio of 3/4 will give you a display width of 960). The downside is that custom ana doesn't work with presets.
