So I have been using the following settings to backup my dvds so I can play it back on my PS3 (streaming or via USB HD).

MP4 file
H.264
FPS: Same as Source
2 pass, turbo first
target size: either 1000 or 1500 mb (depending on movie length)
anamorphic: loose
decomb: default
audio: AAC to Dolby Pro Logic II @ 128kbps auto sample rate

advanced vid settings:

As far as I can tell these settings work pretty well. My only intended playback devices are computers with VLC and PS3. Does anyone have any suggestions that could improve my results with the same size and time and/or achieve the same results while saving me time?

Why use level 4.1? 3.0 is sufficient for SD DVD.

Why target 1-1.5GB instead of a particular bitrate or even quality setting? File size targeting is useful if you need to go to low capacity disks (CDs for SD, DVD for HD) but silly otherwise.

First of all, keep up to date with x264 changes: http://mewiki.project357.com/wiki/X264_Settings

brdo and bime are deprecated, and some of the options you use are now default (mixed-refs, weightb).

merange=32 is overkill, and so is no-fast-pskip if psy-rd is enabled. trellis 2 is also slow considering its minor impact on compression.

b-pyramid will not work in 0.9.4 unless you disable mbtree (and mbtree is more useful than b-pyramid). It may also cause some audio sync issues on the PS3.

Also, as mduell pointed out, x264 now sets the level automatically. It's better not to specify it; with your settings and DVD sources, you wouldn't exceed level 3.1 anyway.

So i'm new to handbrake and i'm just wondering what the best settings are for the ps3 preset? I'm backing up my dvds to my external HD and want to play them back on the ps3. But i have no clue what settings to put it on....

The high profile preset should work on the PS3.

Chose the High Profile Preset. (Uses a Quality Setting: Fast Efficient with outstanding results and added bonus: small file size).
Ensure you have the AC3 5.1 selected as PassThru, along with a Core Convert to AAC. Rename the extension to MP4 and it will play on the PS3 Slim. I have over 200 DVD's ripped in this way and they play perfectly. (Note: I only have to change the file extension for those encoded with version 0.9.4. I'm not sure what the difference is, but its a small additional step for a great app.)

There is a tick-box in the preferences of the GUI (windows gui at least) that says "rename mp4 files to m4v for itunes/ipod compatibility".

Untick that.

I have an issue with this as well.
I have used normal settings for testing purpose, video codex h264 in a mp4 container, and as for audio AC3, AAC core audio, mixdown dolby pro logic II (the default handbrake settings). I didn't touch anything else.

I use a mac for encoding, and ps3 media server to stream the media to my ps3.
The file extension is .m4v by default.

The file plays well on my Mac.

If I try to play the file on my PS3 I have the message : data damaged. Then I try to play them through transcode, it works except the sound, I mean I have some delay with the sound and the image.

I tried to change the extension from m4v to mp4, it changed nothing. Then I tried to copy the file to my PS3 hard drive, unable to read it.

So, any idea on how I can fix it to have a file readable on my PS3 ? (and so without the need for transcoding)

I am experiencing skipping playback when using the normal settings. Could this be attributed to a wireless connection? I don't see how a ps3 would need more than 54mbps for streaming movies.

The 54 Mbps speed promised is the theoretical peak speed for 802.11g, which you may get if both tranceivers are placed on a direct line of sight at a range of less than a metre. Real world sustained transfer speeds are usually around half this at most, usually even less due to signal drop, interference and/or packet collisions.

There is a tick-box in the preferences of the GUI (windows gui at least) that says "rename mp4 files to m4v for itunes/ipod compatibility".

AC3 tracks and chapter markers require "m4v" for Apple device compatibility, so the "m4v" extension will be used regardless of the preference if either is enabled.
