Error: This movie could not be played

Post by Zews »

I just downloaded and installed HB 0.9.4. Several movies that I had trouble with in 0.9.2 (old Japanese classics) came out beautifully now. However, I seem to have trouble with encoding for my iPhone (3G S, Firmware Version 3.1.2).

Whenever I encode a movie with the iPhone preset and try to play it on the phone I get the error message "This movie could not be played". They will play fine on my computer and on my TV though (via XBox 360).

What should I be doing differently?

Posting an activity log would help.

Please provide the Encode Log for one of the movies that won't play on your iPhone.

I'll post two logs, in two separate posts. This one was with Video Codec set to H.264, the next one with MPEG-4 (FFmpeg)

Re: Error: This movie could not be played

Post by Zews »

I have taken one of the HB encoded .m4v movie files that will not play on my iPhone and tried to reencode about half an hour in VisualHub (version 1.27). The resulting file is in the .mp4 format, not m4v

With settings set to iPhone and H.264 Encoding checked, it now plays fine on my iPhone.

Even though this works with VisuallHub, I would prefer not to have to do this. For this movie it adds another 100 minutes of encoding for something that I thought would be working in HB.

Also, HB only seems to encode in .m4v format. I can no longer encode to .mp4 as I could before. Is there a way to still do this?

It's the exact same format. The m4v extension is better supported by Apple devices (allows said devices to see chapter markers, soft subtitles and AC3 tracks).

Can you encode just a few chapters of your source, with the same settings except a constant frame rate of 29.97 fps and see if it plays?

With HB 0.9.2 I would also get chapter markers on my iPhone, but not in QuickTime. Now I also get chapter markers in QT, which is pretty nice!

I did. I encoded 4 chapters at 29.97 fps. I get the same error message on the phone: "This movie could not be played."

If you open your VisualHub encode in QuickTime, does it report the audio track as mono or stereo?

When I go to Window/Show Movie Inspector (Command-I), I get:
H.264, 432 x 320, Millions
AAC, Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz

However the audio of that particular movie is not in stereo. The movie was made in 1962, and the sound was in mono.

You can also see this in the log files.

[23:36:30] * audio track 0
[23:36:30] + decoder: Japanese (AC3) (1.0 ch) (track 1, id 80bd)
[23:36:30] + bitrate: 192 kbps, samplerate: 48000 Hz
[23:36:30] + mixdown: Mono
[23:36:30] + encoder: faac
[23:36:30] + bitrate: 128 kbps, samplerate: 48000 Hz

and

[10:07:42] * audio track 0

[10:07:42] + bitrate: 192 kbps, samplerate: 48000 Hz

BTW, I had tried the "iPhone Legacy" encoding first since the online documentation says: "HandBrake's deprecated settings for the iPhone and iPod Touch. This is the iPhone preset from HandBrake 0.9.2, and while it is offered as a service to legacy users, it is no longer supported."

Since I had been using HB 0.9.2 previously, this is the one I chose to use.

Since that did not work, I now also tried the preset "iPhone & iPod Touch". This results in the same error message.
I also tried "Classic". That didn't work either.

My guess is that VisualHub converts the mono audio to stereo, whereas HandBrake doesn't, and your iPhone doesn't like the mono track. That's only a guess though.

I'll try to rip a more current DVD that has stereo audio and see if that will work for the iPhone, with any of the iPhone Presets.

Doesn't appear to be it - I just tried downmixing a 5.1 track to mono and my iPhone played it just fine.

Could you cut a 3-4 second sample and, if it also refuses to play on the iPhone, upload it somewhere?

I uploaded one chapter. On a broadband connection it's about a 20 second download.

http://files.me.com/abrasha/e17ni5.mov

It was encoded with the "iPhone iPod Touch" preset. No changes were made to the default settings. It plays fine in iTunes, and gets the same error message on the phone. However, in the movies list on the phone, it does show the first frame of the clip, including the subtitle. It just won't play.

I can reproduce the issue on my iPhone.

Saving the file with QuickTime Pro to a .mov files appears to fix the problem, but the subtitle track cannot be selected (which doesn't matter since it doesn't show anything when played in iTunes - the subtitles you see are encoded in the source video).

Removing the subtitle track with Subler also works.

So my guess is that there's something weird about that Closed Captioning track that the iPhone doesn't like. Seems specific to your source, as I cannot seem to reproduce the issue with any of my Closed Captioned sources - they all play fine on my iPhone.

Re: Error: This movie could not be played

Well, I exported the clip in QT Pro, and that works as you say, but for the whole movie, which is 3.5 hours long, that takes about 6 hours. Time I prefer not to have to waste. And I then I also lose the chapter setting on the iPhone.

I tried again to encode directly from the Video_TS folder, trying many different setting. Not one worked.

I then deleted HB 0.9.4 and tried it again as I had done many times before with HB 0.9.2. I used the default setting for iPhone/iPod Touch, and I only changed the cropping in the Picture Settings dialog, so I could get the subtitles in the frame.

Bingo! As I had done before with many movies, it works just fine now. I can play the movie without any problems on my iPhone, WITH chapters. It also plays with chapters in iTunes and VLC. But in QuickTime it only plays WITHOUT chapters. The extension of the movie title is .mp4. It seems that in order to get chapters on the command bar next to the fast forward button in QT, one has to have the movie encoded with an .m4v extension. I don't quite understand that one yet.

When I now check the audio with Command-I, it gives me mono. Before, when I encoded with HB 0.9.4 it gave me stereo, even though the source is mono only.

So, there seems to be nothing wrong with the iPhone, and you do seem to have a point that there seems to be something wrong with the way HB 0.9.4 encodes the audio, since it is changed from mono to stereo. HB 0.9.2 does not do that. I wonder if this is a bug in HB 0.9.4.

So for now, I am sticking with 0.9.2, since obviously it does exactly what I want it to do, without having to do a double encode of a movie.

Does this issue seem like something the developers need to know about, and if so, how do I go about letting them know about this?

BTW, I did not try to encode a more contemporary movie with stereo audio in 0.9.4, so I don't know how that would work for an iPhone encode.

I never said export. A simple Save As worked for me with your sample.

The problematic part in your sample seemed to be the subtitle track (which came from your DVD's Closed Captions track). You're saying you tried an encode without this track and it still didn't work?

Just a QuickTime limitation: it only sees chapters, subtitles and AC3 tracks if the extension is .m4v. There's no need to encode it with the extension though - since .mp4 and .m4v are the same, you can just change the extension.

I never said HandBrake encodes mono tracks as stereo (I said maybe VisualHub did). HandBrake 0.9.4 most definitely does not, as evidenced by your logs and your sample.

Unless encodes without the Closed Captions track also do not work (in which case I'd like to see another log and sample), I do not see an issue here other than a somewhat funky source.

Eureka! I got it to work in 0.9.4.!

First I stuck the DVD back into my DVD player to see if I could figure anything out about the audio or subtitle settings. There is not even a setup on the disk, which I had not realized when I first ripped it. This movie also does not have a separate subtitle track. The subtitles are integrated into the movie. You can't play it without subtitles or play it with different language subtitles other than English. All you can do with this movie is play it, or choose a chapter to play.

So now I installed 0.9.4 again and instead of choosing Subtitles/Closed Captions, with "Forced Only" and/or "Default" checked as I had tried before (3 separate encodes), I now chose "None". That did it!

I did have to change the frame size in the "Picture Settings" dialog, so the subtitles would be included below the frame of the movie, and not cut off. I also made sure to keep the aspect ratio.

Rodeo, thanks for hanging in there with me. BTW, are you one of the developers of HB or only a forum moderator?
