My goal is to convert all my media to itunes format that will play on itunes pumped into my hdmi samsung and I can also use my iphone 3GS. 95% of the time it will be just itunes playing movies and tv shows. I am not using an actual Appletv. I am using a windows itunes and also a mac mini. What is the best apple tv preset advanced settings for a large tv and occasional iphone 3gs use? Thank you.

I'd love to know if the Apple TV preset will work on the new iPod Touch 3G (32/64GB versions). I assume it won't work on the iPod Nano 5G.

Yes it does work on the new ipod touch (3rd generation) I just bought one last night, the 32 GB version and yes, my apple tv preset movies sync and played nicely. Now, I do have one problem... the rips that were done with handbrake 0.9.3 work on the ipod touch, but the rips on 0.9.2 and earlier do not.

Anyone know the difference in the two? Is there an easy way to "convert" it to 0.9.3 without re-encoding?

Ah wish I'd seen this thread before posting in the General forum. I've got an iPhone 3GS, Wife has my old 3G and my eldest son has a iPod Touch V2.

I'd been encoding videos and putting them on my 3GS with no issues. Then went to put a video on the iPod Touch V2 and it won't go on. Same video goes on and plays perfectly on my 3GS.

So I guess this explains it.

I've never used it, but the universal setting would fix all your issues. I looked at the settings for universal vs the apple TV presets last night and tried to see a difference. There isn't much. So, not sure if you can see a difference. In your case, I would def use universal and all devices would be able to sync.

The difference is file size, with the AppleTV preset being smaller.

Is the "iPhone" preset still the best way to go for someone only concerned with transferring videos to an iPhone 3GS? Or are there better settings to use to take advantage of this new functionality now? I can't tell if I want to use "Universal", or if that is only for people who want both AppleTV and iPhone. Thanks

iPhone & iPod touch -> optimized iPhone display (low resolution), plays on any iPhone (can play on ATV too, but won't look as good as Universal or AppleTV presets);

Universal -> full resolution (up to 720x576), plays on any iPhone, recent iPods, ATV;

AppleTV -> full resolution (HD limited to 960x544, IIRC), only plays on ATV (HD and SD), iPhone 3GS or 3rd generation iPod touch (SD only).

Don't forget that with the appropriate cables, an iPod/iPhone can be used to display videos on a TV or other compatible display…

Ok yeah, that all makes sense. I think I saw some mentions in this thread that the 3GS can handle can handle some new features (like B-Frames). It looks to me like these features are not currently enabled for the iPhone/iPod Touch preset...so I guess what I'm wondering is if there are better settings that could be used on the 3GS now (apart from just setting the resolution like the current preset does).

...and the ATV preset, which you were told is compatible with the 3GS, uses b-frames...

I just picked up the 64GB version of the 3rd gen Ipod touch and dropped a recent rip to it to see if it would work.
I ripped the full screen version of "An American Tail" and cabac was enabled.
Here is a summary of the rest of the settings:

Code: Select all

Here is the log of the rip.

Re: iPhone can now use Apple TV Preset

Post by Stingo »

quick question: am I right to think this all means that movies encoded with the "AppleTV" setting will from now also play on both:
...the iPhone 3GS AND the PSP ? (since B-frames are no problem anymore & I have the following preset with CABAC off)
level=21:cabac=0:ref=2:analyse=all:me=umh:subq=7:no-fast-pskip=1:merange=64:mixed-refs=1

Well, as long as you don't go over 720x576 and 7 ref-frames the iPhone 3GS and iPod touch v3 seem to play almost anything. At least I haven't found anything yet that didn't work. So that means the question for the 3GS/touch v3 shouldn't be "iPhone" or "Apple TV" preset but "Apple TV" or "High Quality". Quite impressive.

If someone's interested I'm using this right now:

Code: Select all

-f mp4 -O --crop 80:80:8:8 --strict-anamorphic --decomb -e x264 -q 18 -r 25 -a 1,1,3 -E faac,ac3,faac -6 dpl2,auto,dpl2 -R Auto,Auto,Auto -B 160,32,160 -D 2,0,1.5 --srt-file --srt-codeset UTF-8 --srt-offset 0 --srt-lang eng -m -x b-pyramid=1:b-adapt=2:me=umh:subq=9:analyse=all:trellis=1:ref=6 -v 1
I use this for my PC archive so the files get quite big. But since I rarely take more than two movies with me on the iPhone 3GS, this works just fine for me with the benefit that I just have to maintain one version of each movie.

PS: With another encoder (StaxRip) I tried some higher settings, just for fun. Apart from the ref 7 limit the x264 preset placebo played fine on the 3GS (720x576 anamorphic, crf 16, PAL DVD source).

Code: Select all

crf 16, me tesa, subme 10, merange 24, ref 7, b-adapt 2, direct auto, partitions all, no-fast-pskip, trellis 2, bframes 16, rc-lookahead 60, slow-firstpass
Edit: I forgot to mention, the video must still be level 3.0 or lower or iTunes won't transfer the file. Normally x264 should autodetect level 3.0 for most SD files, but since you can easily set a level with the x264 parameter "level=3" this isn't really a problem.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Still testing, but so far (for SD content):

iPhone 3GS 3.1.2 restrictions:
Ref 7

iTunes 9.0.2.25 transfer restrictions:
720x576 (anamorphic works)
H.264 level 3.0 flag

hi, I wanted to share some new settings for iphone 3gs encoding, trying to have best quality for TV output and syncing to the iphone:
handbrake 0.9.4
High profile
ref : 7
mixed ref: on
bframes :16
adaptive bframe :Optimal
d prediction: spatial
weighted and pyramidal frames : on
motion estimation method : uneven multi-hexagon
subq: 9
Motion estimation range:24
analysis : all
8x8 dct: on
cabac: on
trellis:1
deblocking:default
quality picture: CQ 62%
picture anamorphic: loose
tested video size : 720x400, 30fps/ 720x576, 23,98fps
encoding time: pretty long, about 4-5 hours for a movie.
file encoding result: divx movie(700mb)--> m4v file less than 500mb, video look great(same as original divx) on a 17" LCD monitor(don't have higher)

result is fantastic on my LCD monitor, itunes accept to sync to the iphone 3gs, playback flawless on the iphone.

My goal is to have high quality HD video on my pc (i want to get rid of all my divx) without the need to reencode for iphone 3gs or itouch last gen.
I'm not a pro for the meaning of presets settings, I'll try higher values to see what the 3gs can handle.
feedback and advices are welcome. thank you
Edit: higher values tested, still work. post updated.

Converting with High Profile is indeed a time consuming proces. Since I use a iPhone 3GS and a AV composite cable to watch movies on my non-HD TV, is there any reason (in terms of quality) to use this setting? Or is the Apple TV setting sufficient since I don't have any HD equipment?

I thought all of this was impossible using iTunes/iPod so I was struggling with DiskAid, iFile and Landscape TV out. Are those (jailbreak) apps unnecessary or are there still benefits? (Sorry for my poor English).

AppleTV preset is quite suffiscient, but not as good as a 720p divx file, that's why I wanted to try higher values, the only goal here is to reach perfection.

now, since 3.1 firmware, apple raised video capabilities of iphones and itouch(last gen), wich now let us use CABAC, Weighted and pyramidal frames, and that's a huge revolution.
to answer your question, ifile still a good application to manage your iphone, but no need to use diskaid for videos since now itunes let you sync you high profile video (with my settings), and that's a big deal, it means no need for tvout landscape plugin, and no need to keep 2 or 3 versions of your movie (hd video, appletv format, iphone format). the only doubt I have is the compatibility of my settings with an appletv (I don't have one to test).

try to use my encoding settings with a short video(hd trailer with a lot of moving images, like transformers, you see the idea?) and compare it (quality, size) with an appletv preset, and give me your opinion.
thanks.

I'll give it a try!

But what about the size? Using DiskAid, iFile and Landscape TV Out it is possible to watch movies larger then 720x576. Is that setting of minor importance then the ones you mention above? Sorry but I'm bit of a noob :)

From this discussion it seems the iPhone 3GS supports 64-bit files, but do 64-bit files greater than 4GB in file size work with the iPhone? Is it just as easy to move these across, e.g. with DiskAid?

I suppose either way it wouldn't hurt to leave it on since if the file goes over 4GB it's wrecked anyway but at least it would still play fine on a PC if you had 64-bit formatting on.

For if/when goes over 4GB, could someone recommend a free program to split it into two smaller files that could be put on iPhone? Thanks.

Yes, but I have to say I can't remember the last time I converted a DVD that ended up over 4GB.
