High Profile deprecated?

Post by stoc2528 » Fri Jan 11, 2019 6:53 pm

Why was the High Profile preset deprecated?

I've been using the "High Profile" preset for years because my ripped DVDs and mkv's (from my blu rays) looked great and was relatively fast. I read that the HQ 1080p30 was the correct "replacement" for the High Profile preset but HQ 1080p30 is much, much slower to encode.

Is there a way to truly replicate the old High Profile preset and get the same quality with the same encode speed?

Thanks,

An Activity Log is required for support requests. Please read How-to get an activity log? for details on how and why this should be provided.

With activity logs for the from what you used to get when you think you were using the High Profile preset and the same movie with what you think is the HQ 1080p30 preset, we can point out the differences and changes you need to make for them to be close if not the same.

There isn't much point in keeping legacy presets around. It just causes confusion.

On the Video Tab, Set the Encoder to Preset to Medium.

The new HQ preset should produce an better result in many circumstances but it trades speed to do that. Switching it to "Medium" brings it much closer to what the old preset used to do.

I didn't intend this to be an official support request so I'll rephrase; Why was the High Profile preset deprecated?

Reducing confusion about what to use when, especially with the new variety of presets offered to cover more use cases.

Also it had some legacy cruft that is no longer considered best practice.

I would agree if a current preset duplicated the old High Profile preset but it does not, at least, not in terms of speed vs quality.

I guess I'll just keep both home and work computers on the older 1.1.2 version.

I'll try to get an activity log from version 1.2.0 this weekend. There isn't time left in the work day today. A bluray mkv was only running at ~10fps on an my i5 laptop and wouldn't complete before 5:00pm

You can just encode a chapter to make it finish quicker.

The news for 1.2.0 links to a list of compatible replacements. See the list at the end of https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/1.2.0/tech ... esets.html

In this case, the HQ 1080p30 Surround preset is virtually the same as High Profile. Improvements are "Peak limited to 30 FPS, reduced video bit rate spikes, foreign audio search."

So, since high frame rate content is becoming more common, it limits frame rate to 30 fps max for compatibility. This wasn't a concern at the time High Profile was created. Likewise, H.264 Level is 4.0 which reduces stuttering on devices claiming to support Level 4.1 but not handling the throughout of its maximum instantaneous bit rate. Finally, Foreign Audio Search makes sure to burn in forced subtitles not in the primary audio language.

Combined with a more uniform preset naming convention, these improvements make HQ 1080p30 Surround a more robust High Profile with zero audio-visual quality difference. Try it. ;)

And the "High Profile preset" encode for the same chapter on the same computer?

I'm having trouble doing just that. My laptop is running ubuntu 19.04 beta. Handbrake 1.1.2 doesn't want to install, only 1.2.0 I'll have to re-run the test with a different computer where I can run different versions of Handbrake.
