Europe DVDs

Post by sunspot »

I brought home some German DVDs for my son (really cute stories) and we can play them on my multi-region DVD player, but would love to rip them for using on my ATV just for convenience.

However, when I tried ripping them with Handbrake, all I get are the solid bands of color that remind me of when in the old days stations would go off the air.

Any help here on a process for ripping them? Does it have something to do with them being PAL encoded? Or is it because they are a different region, and I need a decryptor that deals with this?

Thanks in advance.

It likely has to do with PAL and the region code. If your Mac can read the European region code (2 IIRC) you can use MTR to remove the region settings and then try to rip it again.

you could try using DVD Decrypter to rip it to your hard drive first. I dunno if this will help, just an idea.

I assume the settings you're using work fine with US DVDs? Maybe check there aren't any strange settings on.

Do the DVDs play back fine in VLC? And how about when playing them from the hard drive after DVD Decrypting them? Can you rip to AVI (from decrypted) and try playing it back on your PC?

AnyDVD will automatically change region codes in Windows to normalize them to your local region.

I need to run some more tests tonight but the odd thing is that the DVDs play find thru Windows Mediaplayer. I was surprised by that - thought I'd have problems because of country codes.

I will try a few more times without resorting to any specialised methods, but then maybe I will check out DVD decryptor or AnyDVD.

Here is what is killing me - when I try to play the DVD using windows media player 11, it plays fine, as if there is no region issue.

But then when I just try to rip with Handbrake, I get a screen full of different colours. Just bizzare.

So if it was a region coding issue, could I even play it with my gateway which is a US bought machine and when I check it indicates it is a region 1 dvd player?

Help!

Well, I downloaded AnyDVD and it works! I am able to run it in the background and use Handbrake to rip. Curious though - looks like AnyDVD can also rip the DVD.

Am I better off using AnyDVD first and then using Handbrake simply to transcode?

You're fine using AnyDVD in real-time/transparent mode. There's no need to pre-rip.
