Average HD Filesize?

Post by ozmosis82 »

Has anyone encoded anything at 540p/720p from an HD source (like, say, a Blu-Ray disc)? What sort of filesizes, on average, are we looking at in that sort of scenario? Guestimating, of course.

I don't have the equipment to experiment, myself. But I was curious if anyone had tried it out... and I'm especially interested in Apple TV compatibility.

Everything I encode is HD. File size depends on a lot of things (do you want the real surround sound track, or is the stereo track using prologic II enough? what quality do you use?). That being said, I use pretty sane, accepted settings (quality at 55% which is on the low side and the real surround sound track) and I get anywhere from 915 MB (for Waiting, a poor quality "HD" movie) to 9.35 GB(!) for the Godfather blu-ray release, that has an insane amount of detail. I think you can safely expect at least 2-4 GB with underpowered settings and it can get pretty darn high depending on what settings you use past that.

EDIT: the settings I use are "apple tv" compatible. I don't have an apple tv myself, I just try to base what I use on what I read is acceptable yet on the edge of it in other threads here (bframes=3, ref=3, cabac). However, movies like the Godfather, with really high bitrates, would be hard on the Apple TV and I assume wouldn't play because their bitrate is so high.

Yeah... I'd be interested in seeing around what bitrate that the ATV chokes for HD content. Apple says 5mbps... How high does your Godfather encode go?

I'm not sure about spikes during complex scenes, but the average bitrate is ~7500 kbps. I'd check the Devices forum for more information, Dynaflash in particular probably has done the most work stressing the Apple TV in order to come up with the best settings. IIRC he mentioned having ~7000 kbps working, but I assume that was SD. Anecdotally, someone on the VisualHub forums claimed to have an over 10000 kbps movie playing on it, but I find that highly doubtful.

I've been doing quite a bit of testing with HD sources (my own Blu-Ray rips) and have tried various methods. As with everything I'm trying to get a balance between file size and bitrate, without killing the ATV.
As refulgentis has mentioned it is all down to source, and 2 movies killing my ATV at the moment are (unbelievably) Jerry Maguire & Sex And The City (for the wife you understand  ). Both of these on a 62% CRF (i know its high for a HD source, but needed to start somewhere) produced files well in excess of 12Gb with bitrates through the roof. Knocking this down to 59% produces files around 7Gb.
Saying that, Casino Royale at 62% produces a file around 6.5Gb and plays no problems.
With both of these in mind, i decided to try the ABR route at 6000kbps so i can limit my file size however this absolutely killed Casino Royale in the opening sequence credits. With all those fancy graphics going on in the background, especially towards the end of the intro song it was pushing bitrate limits up to about 13000 which was causing stuttering, even with the file synced. After more testing, and using ABR 5500 then ABR 5000 this got those particular bitrates down to spikes of around 9000 - which the ATV played no problem (not really a fan of VBV limits, so was trying to avoid this).
Personally, i like the CRF route so trying to match the ABR of 5000 - i'm now on 59% getting what i think are acceptable bitrates and file sizes. That is until i probably hit the Godfather where 9.5Gb might sound a little rich to me and the Drobo, however it is 3hrs 30mins long.
Cheers

People this is why vbv settings are your friend...for the most part.

I would imagine that we wouldn't want to use the same vbv settings for Blu-Ray source material as we would with DVD source material? And I'd also imagine that it all depends on the source itself.

Huh? What? Why would the content being encoded have anything to do with the AppleTV's video buffer window?

Why, because I'm an idiot. Of course.
